i am a punjabi and have been pleased to visit this site for the first time. i can speak the language and have been interested to read some of the comments. clearly there is a great depth of panjabi culture and it is reassuring to see that it is still alive in east and west punjab. i hope in time we can see greater cooperation between the 2 halves [a result of divide and rule] and greater unity between us regardless of faith. my old mother fondly reminds us that we punjabis are all 'apne lok' and in her day all would go to the nearest gurdwara or mosque at times of celebration. indeed i remember reading of it as a teenager in the uk in a book called 'punjabi century' by prakash tandhay i think.
i wish you well and through this site and others perhaps we can reach out to each other as punjabi comrades

Dear All,
Nice to read, that punjabis are the same everywhere may in India or in Pakistan, or may be in any part of the world. They still love their language and feel proud about it. I know in pakistan people speak punjabi but not sure whether they are able to write it also.
Feel proud to be a punjabi.

Hi all,

The Punjabi language in Pakistan is being eroded at an intellectual level.

Punjabi is spoken in most households in Pakistan Punjab but as usual the so called intellectuals only speak Urdu.

How SAD is it that the recognised languages in Pakistan is Urdu and then English.

SHAME on all the Punjabi people of Pakistan.

When will we wake up to the fact that our heritage and history is being lost.

Does no Punjabi in Pakistan care that the PUNJABI language is written no more, and is discouraged from being spoken at school.

The usual intellectuals use punjabi as an excuse to seperate the fact that they believe they are superior by speaking in URDU or English. The excuse is Punjabi is a poor man's language of uneducated classes.

Have we forgotten Bulheh Shah, Punjabi Poetry.
Shame..........................

If only the Punjabi people of Pakistan can wake..

Babar.

Dear Brother

Thank you for your concern about Punjabi in Pakistan. Well it is wonderful people like you brother who need to do some activation of these dormant people.

By the way you may not believe but punjabi.net is visited by a very large no of Punjabi people of Pakistani birth of all walks from not only Pakistan but many other countries.

The interesting thing is that they do speak Punjabi at home but in the market and office or public places they feel more comfort in using Urdu.

One day the same people will once again speak Punjabi as soon it will become the fashion. Punjabi language and culture is being revived by younger generations who are tired of imposed and super imposed cultures on them.

Please feel proud in speaking your mother tongue.
Respecting our mother tongue is respecting our forefathers and parents. Please encourage all people you know to speak Punjabi.

Once Indian Punjabi and Pakistani Punjabi were same languages ,Its origins were same .Now these are different languages or being different ,due to its different scripts and dictions

It is an admited fact that at last different script and different dictions converts languages into different languages .Its best example is Hindi and Urdu .You will see that one day eastren and westren Punjabi will be different languges due to its these differencs ,although people speak same language in Lahore and Ludhiana .Our wishes have no power to change the mattreil situition,

Munda Lahore Da, i am happy to get a reply from someone in Lahore who is proud of his culture and heritage. I am well aware fo the diversity of Punjabi in west Punjab. It is also the same case here. Throughout Punjabi history, Punjabi has always been spoken differently in the various belts. These belts exist in between the rivers. I did not at all mean to say that Punjabi isnt spoken by west Punjabi's. I am well aware that still 80% speak Punjabi, especially in the villages.
About your freind saying that the punjabi spoken by Sikhs is correct, i have no idea what he means. Punjabi is Punjabi. It is spoken the same by Muslims, Sikhs, and Hindus with the exception of the dialects spoken in the different regions.
I was also making reference to a web site for the promotion of Punjabi culture that was created by west punjabi's and east punjabi's both muslims and sikh. The web site is www.apnaorg.com. I encourage everyone to visit this site.
May our culture, mother tounge, and heritage never fade. Salam Alikum and Sat Sri Akal to all my freinds.

Sukhwant Singh ji,
Sat Sri Akal. I would like to invite u to Pakistani Punjab. Why dont u come and see how Punjabi is still so much lively in Pakistan. The proof of that is that we have about 10 accents of punjabi in Pakistan (much more than there are in Indian Punjab). This itsself is a proof against your statement.
Someone down below in these postings mentioned that punjabi is fading away in Pakistan and that thanks to Islam. Well first of all it is not the case and even if it was then sure why not. Afterall Islam comes first and then comes punjabi. Dont get me wrong im not trying to be rude here but my best friend is a Sikh (indian Punjabi) and he always says that Sikh punjabi is the right one. I really dont get it. Please tell me do u guys think so ?
Punjabi is the same everywhere. However its accent differs from place to place and im sure it differs like that in Indan Punjab too. So i dont think that you'r Punjabi or my punjabi is better. Punjabi is Punjabi and thats it.

Thanx
Lahori

Dear Sukhwant Singh

I dont agree with your friend in pakistani punjab. It may be true in his family. Special cases are everywhere.
On the other hand a few other communities in Pakistan blame punjabis for nationalism.
Punjabi is as lively in pakistani punjabi as it was ever in this area. It could be visualized if one just goes into streets of lahore and anyother punjabi city.
PUnjabi in Pakistani punjab is even more diverse than in indian punjab. So many accents are spoken here, that just look like different types of same flower.

Salam Alikum to all my muslim freinds. One of my best freinds is from Lahore in west Punjab and can speak some Punjabi. He primarily speaks Urdu and has himself stated that Punjabi doesn't really get spoken in the cities in West Punjab and that also some people regard it as an illeterate man's language. Im am a Sikh who's family is from Jalandhar but originally from Gujranwala before partition and can clearly state that Punjabi is fairly secure in East Punjab as all the Sikhs speak it at home and away as well. Hindu's in East Punjab have also taken a similar stance as some in West Punjab and regard their mother toungue as an illeterate man's language.
The Punjabi language is one of the oldest languages in the world and has been the language of great scolars seer's and poets in the Indian subcontinent. Let's not forget the great poets like Baba Bulleh Shah, and Baba Farid who has also contributed to the Sikh holy scriptures, Waris Shah and others. Be proud of your Punjabi culture, heritage, and history.

May Allah bless you all.

Dear Anonymous (April 22) and Anonymous (Aug 24)

Actually the Qur'an says, "All [believers] believe in God, His Angels, His Books and His Messengers. They say, 'We do not discriminate against any of His Messengers.'" (Qur'an 2:285)

Therefore, Islam accepts all previous scriptures and prophets that were truly sent by God. Don't blame religion on any problems between any country! This is not the fault of religion this is the fault people!

Every religion no matter if it is Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism etc. the core values seem consistent. 'All religions teach that stealing, adultery, lying, cheating and murder are wrong. Each also has some form of self-denial rituals and prayer methods.' How can you say Islam doesn't accept other religions? The Qur'an also states that "Tell the Jews and Christians, 'We believe in the Revelation which has come down to us [the Qur'an]and in that which came down to you [the Torah and Gospel]; Our God and your God is one; and it's to Him we surrender'" (Qur'an 29:46)

Maybe you don't know to well or the book, articles etc. in which you've learned about Islam are incorrect but by Islamic Law a muslim must respect the Holy Books of other religions and it is forbidden to desecrate them.
