What exactly is Punjabi Culture?

In the past century we have changed so much.
Punjabis have evolved a lot.
We have enriched ourselves, educated and seen the world.
Yet we have also lost touch with our roots and our basic cultures.

Culture speaks through various of our expressions.
Our finer arts, our performing arts, our education, our skills, our good and irreplaceable values and traditions.

Culture is a set of norms and behaviour of a community.
Culture is also the continuation of good values and behaviour and shedding of stale values and keep modifying and amending our ways to adapt to the modern times.

We have altered our behaviour and culture in many ways sometimes willingly in the zeal to progress and other times by force of economics, religion or politics.

Despite our abandon and ignorance of our culture, we still carry in ourselves deep roots of Punjabi civilization.

Are we civilized?

That is a tough question to answer.
We invite your views.

Some other questions are:

Are we better off than ever before?

What has been lost in the partion of Punjab?

What has been the achievements of Separated Punjab in Pakistan and in India?

What have we done in the last 50 years, to preserve, to keep our culture?

How do we define Punjabi Culture?

How is the Punjabi culture so distinct from the rest of the world?

What can we do to enrich our culture?

What can we do to be proud of our culture?

How cultural expressions through arts, writing and creative works can be made more easily available?

How can I contribute to enrich Punjabi Culture?

To start with visit this site run by friends like you and write good and valuable information, your views and commentaries.

Your answers, suggestions, ideas are most welcome.

punjab is to be judged not only on past glories but the follies of their petty leaders in recent past.onthe name of religion, language and caste they have always divided.nothing has changed.under the garb of our great culture we are caste-ridden,have adopted religious bigotry, superstitions and so on.
our leaders are the greatest hypocrite, and narrow-minded.

How can you discuss punjabi culture without discussing kabaddi? These days the youth is into basketball, soccer, ice-hockey, cricket, etc which is fine but kabaddi is and will always be the sport of punjab. Both pakistan punjab and india punjab.
The kabaddi season just kicked of in ontario this weekend i believe. There's going to be a charity kabaddi event in ontario on june 12th. The Peel Regional Police kabaddi team will take on the ontario allstars. See this link for details http://www.kabaddi•••••/forums/index.php?showtopic=38
tickets are $10 and can be purchases from ticketmast or at the door.
Also check out http://www.kabaddi.org for kabaddi pics, news, discussion, etc.

By Punjabi on Tuesday, August 19, 2003 - 5:56 pm:

Punjabis had a good history as survivors against great odds such as continuous attacks by others. But the greatest loss of Punjabis occured when they were converted into 3 major religions by non Punjabis which pitted them against one another. Ever since Punjab has been deteriorating in values, culture and land geographically. The partitioning of Punjab between India and Pakistan was the greatest setback and blow to Punjabis as the killing and murder unleashed by Punjabis on each other broke their bonds and sowed the seeds of distrust. Now they are easily manipulated and dominated by Urdu speaking people in Pakistan and Hindi speaking in India. The result is under the name of nationalism and patriotism Punajabi language has been suppressed and pushed down by these non Punjabi people. A classic case where Urdu and Hindi speaking people (Jinnah, Nehru, Gandhi etc.) pushed their own agenda on Punjabis and manipulated to gain for themselves and their people by exploiting the emotions of Punjabis by instigating them first against the British. Then they instigated Punjabis against each other on religious line causing a holocaust on trapped Punjabis in partition. Later they used Urdu and Hindi language to dominate and push them down and finally have driven them into poverty the result of which is that to-day Punjabis have flocked to settle overseas and strangely enough guess where? In the lands of english people (UK, USA, Canada, Australia, NZ) the very people they drove out of India in the name of freedom struggle and independence. This always happens to fools. First they are instigated, used and then lose all their wealth and are then kicked out from their own lands and homes. So before people start endless, mindless praise of Punjabis and each other think of what you all have lost and now like the tribes of Israel Punjabis have to move from one country to another away from their country. It may be for 2000 years like the Jews.

By Panj-ab on Thursday, February 01, 2001 - 7:53 am:

Stop the crap!

First things first. I dunno why being punjabi- Sikh, Hindu or Muslim isn't something to be proud off?

Let's look at the facts:

1. The Punjabi language itself shows evidence of existence right from 3 B.C. in the days of the Buddhist Rule under Emperor Ashoka.

2. The Father of Punjabi- Baba Farid Shakir-e-Ganj was a very pious and great man now how many other languages can claim that a saint created there language. E.G. The Hindi language was mainly created by a Hindu saint called Tulsi Das and one only has to read his views on women to realise what a nice man he was!

3. Punjab itself is the oldest civilsation on earth. The Indus Valley Civilasation (Now in Sindh, Pakistan) is the oldest upon the face on this earth so we are defineltey more civilsed than most of the world!!!!

4. The worlds or one of the world oldest languages was created in the Punjab- Sanskrit. The ancient language of the Hindus/Indian was created in the area known as Pakistan Punjab/India Punjab, Himhical Pradesh and some of U.P. when it was all known as Punjab.

5. It's also the language of the Sikh Guru's.

6. The punjab itself therefore has always been a civilsed and religious area:

a. World's oldest civilsation.
b. World's oldest language.
c. Religions created there- Sikihsm
d. Religous movements created/climaxed there- Vedaism and Sufism.

7. So finally being Punjabi is something to be proud of regardless. It has a little of everyone and everything within it's 5 rivers.

Asslam-alekium, Namasate and Sat-Sri-Akal

Gutless is when someone does not have the guts to do something. In other words they do n't have it in them. Wanker is am expression used in England. It's real meaning is male masturbation. But it is also used to describe a person (man) who is a waste of space (not worth the bother).

I take it you are from North America.

Your community is not united and on your own you can n't do •••• all, apart from putting your pathetic view on this site because you do n't have it on you to say it to our face. That's becaue youe white people are guttless wankers.

Dear Panjabis
Baba Nanak's Birthday will be celebrated on 11th November 2000 and I would like to post the following piece to share with you a reflection and a rethinking of the teachings of Baba Nanak and the effect they had on Panjab, Panjabi and Panjabiness (Panjabiat).

Celebration of the Birth and Life of Baba Nanak Dev Ji, Patron Saint of Panjab

QUEST FOR LIBERATION AND THE BIRTH OF PANJABI NATIONALISM

The 'Golden Age' of Panjabi history began in the 15th Century when the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the Patron Saint of Panjab, prompted the creation of national consciousness in Panjabi society. A succession of a further nine Gurus (teacher-educators) continued with the task of nation-building and in the year 1699, the original Sangat (embryonic Nation) established by Guru Nanak, fully flowered into the Panjabi Khalsa Panth (Sovereign Nation). This period ushered in spiritual, intellectual, social, political and ethnic integration and pioneered the formation of a new Dharam (national culture).

During Guru Nanak's period, the country of Panjab, already under foreign occupation by the tyrannical Delhi Sultanate, was further looted and plundered, the defenceless people abused and humiliated by a succession of foreign invaders, creating discontent and crisis amongst the people. The enslaved Panjabis yearned for a transformation in their political, economic and social structures and hence, were receptive to the teachings of Guru Nanak which proposed the re-organisation of Panjabi society.

Guru Nanak put forward the idea that God created all humans as equal and that every individual had the God-given right to live with honour, dignity and freedom. He also propounded the idea that every person had a direct covenant with God. Nanak stressed the triumph of human will over karma (fate and predestination). These ideas posed a challenge to the domination and exploitation of the masses by the corrupt Brahmin and Mullah priests, who claimed to be the mediators between God and the people. The falsity of the priesthood was therefore exposed and their authority undermined. Nanak also created an alternative system of prayer and meditation by the reciting and singing of Bani (sacred Panjabi poetry). Thus the adoption of their mother tongue, Panjabi, for spiritual discourse led to the rejection of the foreign Arabic and Sanskrit languages, increasing the sentiments of self-confidence and national pride. The ensuing break from the foreign Islamic and Brahmanic religious centres of Mecca and Hardwar was the most significant factor to further the development of Panjabi national consciousness. The reading and discourse of Bani also promoted literacy and understanding amongst the illiterate masses who previously had been denied access to learning and knowledge. This process led to the unchaining of minds that were moulded by law, customs and prejudice of the Imperial State and its priesthood. Institutionalised religion was exposed as a tool of the despotic rulers to retain their power, for it was used to persuade the masses that it was their duty to obey and that the next life was more important than this one. This growing community of learners (Sikhs) was empowered by spiritual as well as rationalist and scientific thought and activity.

Guru Nanak's assertion that the voice of the people was the voice of God replaced the idea fostered by the priesthood which sanctioned the rule of the King as a God-given right. This led to the rise of opposition against the despotic rule of the Imperial Delhi Sultanate over the territory of Panjab. This provided the people with the awareness that they had the right to participate in political decision-making and self-governance. Such enlightenment also paved the way to a changed view of social hierarchy and the traditional class structure i.e. new attitudes started to form, especially amongst the lower stratas of society. An increasing awareness and desire for self respect and individual human dignity fostered resentment against the foreign occupiers of Panjabi territory, who held their subjects in contempt. The importance of birth into the nobility and high caste lost ground with the assertion of Guru Nanak's that all are created equal. Nobility was now being defined, not by the origins of birth, but by an individual's personal qualities and behaviour (Gurmukh). The consciousness of the idea that the people are an elite (Nation) made Panjabis feel like noblemen (Singh-Sardars) and that 'blue blood' was no longer necessary to achieve high positions in society. Hence the birth of Panjabi nationalism was due to the desire for fundamental transformation of the divided, exploited and enslaved people into a united, motivated, creative and liberated national society i.e. a transformation of a low Panjabi culture to a high national culture (Panthic Dharam).

Guru Nanak introduced the practice of Nam Japna, a meditative process in which to ponder, reflect, search and discover the undiscovered. His concept of seva (service to one's community and the rest of mankind) gave rise to sentiments of national patriotism. His idea of kirit karni (participation in productive and creative processes) and wand ke shakana (sharing of the goods and services) stimulated both economic activity and cultural renaissance and inculcated a desire in the people to be the masters of their own destiny and have control over the production and distribution of the resources of their Homeland.

His ideas not only founded a unique national identity but also created a consciousness of connection with kudarut (nature), hence creating awareness of the distinctiveness of the Panjabi Des (country) and a love of the land, together with a longing for independence of the national space. Guru Nanak loved Des Panjab and celebrated and embraced its landscape in song and poetry in Bara Mah (description of the twelve months of the year). This portrayal of Panjab as a rich and vibrant living personality had never been done before.

The concept of Ek Onkar (Unity in Diversity), propounded by Guru Nanak, fostered an understanding that diverse and distinct territories of the world had given birth to unique peoples and cultures (multi-culturalism) and since we are all the creation of the one God, we must co-operate and exercise goodwill (Sarbat da bhala) to forge harmony and unity in diversity. Hence the Nation of Guru Nanak is opposed to racism, religious fundamentalism and imperialism. (Na koi vari na koi bagana)

Baba Nanak, by linking both the submerged people and their marginalised language directly with God, elevated them into a Divine status and thus transformed Panjab into a unique land of sanctity and learning. As important as the spiritual and social aspects of Nanak's teachings, were the political. He was the first popular leader of the Panjab in recorded history.Rab Teh Panth Rakha

Dear fellow Panjabis
I am posting this information which was distributed in London during one of our festival celebrations, in which we attempt to redefine Panjabiness. I will be interested to hear your comments.Best Panjabi wishes.

VAISAKHI: CELEBRATION OF PANJABI NATIONAL IDENTITY

On 13th April 1998, the Festival of Vaisakhi will be celebrated by Panjabis throughout the world. Vaisakhi is not only the celebration of the Panjabi New Year, but also the celebration of Panjabi national identity.

Panjabi distinctiveness is the product, not of a race, but of the environment (Kudrut). The rivers, the open plains and the high mountains, combined with the climate of our country, Des Panjab, have all played an important part in producing a people with a unique character and identity.

The Panjabi character and identity is also the product of our history and culture which has been influenced by movements, institutions and individuals. Contributors include Baba Sheikh Farid, the Ten Great Gurus, Mata Sahib Kaur, Mata Bhago Kaur, Baba Banda Singh Bahadur, Baba Buleh Shah, Baba Waris Shah, Baba Deep Singh, Bhai Jassa Singh Ramgarhia, Bhai Jassa Singh Ahluwalia, Bhai Professor Puran Singh, Bhai Ditt Singh, Bhai Shoba Singh (artist) and Bhai Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.

Panjabi history reveals that we are peace-loving and we embrace and welcome one and all, but for centuries we have been subject to oppression and exploitation by foreign occupation of our country, be it in the form of the Moghul Dynasty, British Imperialism or Indian Unionism. Panjabi resistance to these conquests and domination are the high points in our national history. Despite this tyranny of occupation, we continue in one form or another to manifest our nationalism (Panthism) whether in poetry, philosophy, literature, ceremonies, Gurpurbs, festivals, story-telling, drama, art, folklore, costumes, music, song, dance, or prayer and Ardas.

The Guru period of Panjabi history, beginning in the 15th Century and stretching over 230 years, saw the dawn of the Golden Age of Panjab. This period ushered in spiritual, intellectual, social, political and ethnic integration and transformed Panjabis to a national status. The Gurus united our Panjabi territory, language and Khalsa Panth with the Divine. Panjabi nationalists strode forward in history not only to liberate our country but also to establish the most powerful Panjabi Empire in Asia.

The Father of the Nation, Emperor Guru Gobind Singh Ji, marching through Panjabi history and changing its course, called a national gathering on the mountaintop at Anandpur Sahib on the Vaisakhi of 1699 and proclaimed the Declaration of Nationhood. He then voluntarily transferred both the Divine national authority vested in him to the sacred Book, Guru Granth Sahib and the sacred political authority to the people, Guru Khalsa Panth (Panjabi Sovereign Nation), hence laying down the foundations for the establishment of a Panjabi democratic civil society.

Panjab flourished only for a short period as an independent State, for soon after the death of Maharajah Ranjit Singh the British Imperialists waged war against the Panjabi State. After seven Anglo-Panjabi wars, sovereign Panjab was annexed into British Imperial India on 29th March 1849. In 1947, when the British left the Indian Empire, sovereignty of our country Panjab was transferred to the Indian Union without our consent and despite our protest.

Our Panjabi language, history and literature, especially our sacred national literature Gurbani, has provided us with a unique national genius and character with its own ways of thinking, acting and communicating. This sense of national identity provides us with a powerful means of defining and locating ourselves in this world. Through a shared unique culture, we are able to know who we are and by rediscovering our culture, we rediscover ourselves and the connection with our roots in our spiritual Homeland, Des Panjab. This process of self-definition and location will provide us with the necessary strength, security, protection and sense of belonging in this uncertain and fast changing modern world.

We must all work collectively to transform our ossified, stagnant and passive religious culture to a progressive, forward-looking, dynamic and powerful national culture (Panjabi Khalsa Dharam).

By 5aby on Friday, July 7, 2000 - 02:30 am:

Could be the lack of exposure to different culture and people. You know the fear of the "unknown".

The social system of India has been as such over the past thousands of years that people have been contained. By contained I am referring to being enclosed in their "little" castes. Even within castes you'll see divisions. Due to this closed up social structure, people are born into one thing, and that is all they know and are familiar with and feel comfortable in. They like that belonging to that one small group I suppose, because I don't think they realize that "life" does exist outside of it. Socially too, I don't think many know how to interact with others outside thier little groups. Even if they do interact with "others" they do so at very superficial levels. On the inside they see others as "outsiders". They have that mentality "my type of people", and "other type of people".

I think most punjabi parents (like the most of other indians) think they are protecting thier children and preserving their culture. Most of the time they do have the best interest of the child at heart.

But I would say overall "most indians" fear their relatives and community. I think they suppress thier desires, or rather shape up their identity based on "what the people will say". By people I am referring to their "cultural community."

One other point to be noted that I've realized is that most Indian parents see their children as little kids. I mean for all you know the person may be 26 or 28. They still think of the adult children as kids who need guidance, and instructions and supervision, and need to be told how to live their life. I think most don't realize the importance of raising children to be independent, and don't allow them to express their individuality. Again the "group mentality" prevails.

One thing they don't do is "question" their "group mentality". They need to realize maybe just maybe somethings are not right, and it's about time they made some adjustments.

By 5aby on Friday, July 07, 2000 - 2:30 pm:

Why are so many Punjabis dead set against inter-racial marriages? Is it because they see it as a threat to their continued existence?
Or simply because they take a narrow view of life? I'm marrying a non-Sikh, by the way. My parents, fortunately, are open-minded, although relatives aren't too pleased. I'm in Malaysia.... what is the situation like in the rest of the world?

I'm marrying this person out of love... I'm not giving up my culture though, my partner is supportive and understanding enough to also immerse himself in my culture, and vice versa!

You have no right to be judgemental about the sikh and punjabi way of life. We are a wonderful people and look at yourself in the mirror - there is nothing much to look at right? You write horrible things about the punjabi people because you feel very insecure with us around. Our race is unconquerable and you cant withstand that. We have loads of talent and good looks and you cant digest that because I heard that Quasimodo died because he saw you. Even he the Hunchback of Notterdame was a beautiful man because he had a wonderful heart. We came to America to teach some Americans like you the real meaning of live and love. You dont seem to realise that if we had not emigrated to America from India and in particular Punjab you would not be where you are today - you would have been in deeper shit!! You walk in shit, you smell shit, you walk in shit and pee in puss and you eat shit that is why when you open that damned mouth of yours only shit comes out from it. We punjabis are not going to dirty our hands by murdering you - we being the generous lot that we are - spare you because ultimately retribution is never too far and when it gets its hands on the likes of you - It will be bonnddhe paard massalah!! If you do not know what it means try putting gunpowder in your ass and light it!! See what happens to you! Cheers!!

Listen, first of all we don't inbreed. People change their last name to Singh after they became baptised. Sikhs don't have any version of any the Hillbillies like you guys do.
Secondly, go check peoples mag from a few years back. When they voted who the best looking guys were Punjabi guys were voted the best looking. Most Sikhs are Punjabi so that ='s good looks.
Moreover, we have better values than you guys. Atleast none of our daughters come home knocked up at the age of 11. And I really like knowing who my goddamn parents are... you know what I'm saying. I wonder if you know who your parents are????
You have no goddamn culture. Alternative music is a bunch of people whining how they got nothing. Oh, and my fav. Marilyn Manson... what kind of a culture has men dressing up like they are women???
Also, all you North American ppl talk about being civilized. Most of you are so civilized that you have bathrooms with big sinks that you never use after taking a crap in the bathroom. Real civilized?? And you talk to me about messed up values... plz bro give it up.
Every culture has good elements, as well as bad elements in it. If you don't realize that then you are a damn fool.

Anonymous Ji

You are an ass hole for writing all that you do and in the way you do but it is so hilarious and informative that I must say HATS OFF TO YOU!!

I really enjoyed the one on the Bhangra dance!

By Anonymous on Friday, December 10, 1999 - 10:20 pm:

Rules of Bhangra

RULE1:-
First of all males & females must not dance together
when on the dance floor (unless brother-sister or husband-wife)
They must stay in their own dance area which is allocated to them when
they arrive at the wedding or parlty. If they go offside they will be
given a dirty look & classed as a slag or a stud by the opposite party.

RULE2:-
If you are a female & at a wedding then you must walk around in
a circle following the female in front of you in an orderly fashion. As
you are walking around you must wave your arms about & maybe twist a bit
at the hips for added effect if you are feeling daring.
You can glance & smile at the boyz, but make sure you are not being
watching.

RULE3:-
If you are a female & at a nightclub then make sure you put on plenty
of makeup and wear skin tight clothes or miniskirts & half-tops so that
there is no doubt that you want some tonight.
As mummi-ji ijj not at the club watching you, then you do not have to
dance in circle. You must dance & try to look sekjee by moving jour bottom
in a sekjee way.
This way your message bill be loud & clear.

RULE4:-
Ifyou are a female over 40 at a wedding and think that you
are just too good, then you are allowed to do the "applaud" dance. This'
is where you can break out the circle & dance in the middle with another
female who thinks's she is good too. Both of you must lean slightly
forward & raise your arms so they are parallel with your head & shoulders
& then you clap your hands violently as you move in a circle.
For added effect & if you are feeling really daring you can do a little
screaming "hoy hoy" sound as you dance.

RULE5:-

Males:- The males have more freedom!! You do not have to dance in a circle,
or in an orderly fashion like the females. You must move your body as much
as possible & must dance on every square inch of the dance floor. As you
dance you must move your arms & legs very violently & just punch & kick
anyone who gets in your way. You are also allowed to hug and kiss other
men,
wrap your legs around other men, fall on the floor with other men.
Occasional
breaks for cigarettes are allowed where you must leave the dance floor, if
at
a wedding, and go for a long walk around the corner where you will find
many
other male Bhangra Dancers.
Please note that your tie must be wrapped around your head and not around
your neck if you wish to carry on dancing. You must also dance until the
back of your shirt is damp as well as under your arms.

Just wanted to know why when you fall in love with an indian man, does he tell you months later he has arranged marriage and he will come back after marriage and then divorce her... Due to the fact that he never loved the indian women in the first place, then why get married to her at all.

And why spend all that money and divorce anyway, when you dont have to get married in the first place, because of arrangement...

Love should be the only reason for marriage in the first place..... don't you think so???

Poetry can be written using many different forms like khulee kavita, mahia, dhola, sami, chhand, vaarian, bolyian. Chhand is one of the techniques of writing poetry. Its main focus is on the rhythmic pattern of the words interwoven with the feelings and emotions that the poet wants to convey to the listener. In Punjabi poetry we have many a great writers who have written some wonderful touching poetry in chhand technique only. The most prominent of them is Prof. Mohan Singh. If you have come across any book of Prof. Mohan Singh, you will definitely find some excellent verses written using chhand technique. The rhythmic pattern is made in such a way as if it looks like there is flow of words and emotions just like flow of water in a river. Moving slow at sometime and moving fast at sometimes. Babbu Rajab Ali introduced a new technique in Punjabi chhand poetry. Not many people are familiar with his poetry. This technique was known as 72 Kalaa and it added an invaluable gem in the treasury of Punjabi chhand poetry. To make yourself more familiar with this technique, do read poetry of Prof. Mohan Singh and Babbu Rajab Ali. In masses, chhand is usually sang at wedding time only but one can add more diversification about subjects of day to day life and enrich punjabi poetry using this technique of poetry.

men come to the usa and date the women here when
in fact they are already engaged to an arranged
marriage back home? This seems a waste of time
for the person here in the usa dating indian men!

Darvesh kyo Nachde hai

Pyare dosto

kai log puchchde hai ke Darvesh kyo Nachde hai.
Darveshi sufiana culture asi turkey to import kita si.

Yesterday near Amritsar Punjab there was a huge festival at a guru (pir) samadhi where they distribute spiritual liquor.
Heard it right. thousands of People mostly young men, fight for getting some drops. It is real liquor and distributed in glasses.

I saw in the news and they were all dancing like Darvesh.
Someone asked me other day why Darvesh drank bhang and liquor and danced in constant kirtan.

Unable to bear the fire of separation from God, dervesh seeks some soothe and peace. Just like the mother swings the child in the cradle and it gets much relief from pain of birth and growing... darvesh dances to get relief from pain of existence in this painful life............While whirling and dancing darvesh can glance God in his ownself..

Tusi naacho bhai sahib aur kya pata aaj aap ji kucch dekhan

To know about Punjabi compassion and faiths

why sufis dance can be explained by Baba Bhulle Shah poetry,
Nak wich natli, tey tan uthe Kaghri te kan which dandiyan
ut Bhulleyah yaar manley paweh lok pawan pandeyan

Another one,
Tere ishq nachayan kar ke taya taya,
is ishq te jhangi wich mor bulehnda
sano kibla tey kaaba sohna yaar wasendha
sanoo gayal kar ke phir khabar na layah
Tere ishq nachayan kar ke taya taya
Jhetey borey we tabiba nahin te mein mar gayan.

another one,
je ik wari yaar meri kabar tey pawey perah
hadiyan kabar to nikel ke karsan mujrah terah

Oh meccey de whaath keyoo kawey jidhey yaar noo takeyah haj hovey,
Nachna we ibadat ban jhandi je nachney de yaaro chaj hovey.
These are very beautiful sonnets written by Bhulle shah if any one can add please do so much appriciated. Also feel fee to contact me on email .I am doing astudy on Baba bhulle Shah therefore any help will be needed. Thank u all punjabis makes me feel proud that alot of people are interested in punjabi issues.Love to all Punjabis and be proud whether u are from india or pakistan side but at the end u are punjabis.
