Punjabi is derived from Sanskrit and has been changing for last thousands of years and in last 800 years has been heavily influenced by Turkish and Persian.
Punjabi is a very subtle, very beautiful language.

The sweetness depends on your own style, accent and intonation.

I ask you where do they speak the most standard Punjabi? Some of my friends think the best Punjabi is spoken in Ludhiana/Patiala area of East Punjab and Faislabad (Old Layallpur) of West Punjab?
My other friends believe that in Amritsar and Lahore they speak the most standard Punjabi. What do you think?

In reality all kind of Punjabi from artificially snobbish to simple and natural Punjabi is good if spoken sweetly and with love..Its magic can be mind boggling. Just try and you will see the miracles.

The problem is when Punjabis say that they dont know a word of Punjabi including the meaning of their name. I have a few British born Punjabis who claim not to understand Punjabi at all.

A friend is trying to find the American name of a flower her mother gave her... in Punjabi, it is "raat de rani", with a literal translation, she says, of 'night queen'. This name does not match any flowers we can find. Would someone know of this flower?...it is a vine with white flowers, many small flowers in a cluster and is very fragrant, and blooms only at night. Your help is very much appreciated!

A Gori learning Punjabi sounds and looks even more beautiful. Learning Punjabi is much easier than English since the pronunciations are fairly consistent. I know an author who has just published his book titled "Write Punjabi The Easiest Way: Book 1, A Beginner's Guide." You might wish to contact the author at Jaspal- at - rogers.com for further information.

Is punjabi a Sikh Language?

Is Hindi replacing Punjabi in temporary Punjab?

Is there any hostility against the punjabi-language from the IndianGovernment,I've heard from my informants that it is, but i want to check it here!

Punjabi Future

I found what Khulwant Singh said about the weakness of Punajbi insulting. Shakespreare investerd half the English words that exist, because he needed to. The rest were absorbed over one thousand years from Greek, latin, french, Sanskrit, Chinese etc.

Therefore there is nothing wrong with Punjabi absorbing words from English, if the sourse words to create new ones can not be found in the Guru Granths Sahib, Sanskrit, Hindi or Urdu.

BUT it does not always have toi be English. Spanish for Example is far more like Punjabi. I propose we counter Khushwant Singh and introduce appropriate words where there is no Punjabi word by experince of the Language to it. For example the word for Beetle and Cockroach id Bhonndh, thus no specific enough, so please someone introduce a new varirty for one or the other.

Most Punjabi's live in English speaking countries, whic is why we have adopted from it. Jeegra means Lobster and Prawns in Punjabi. I have taken from Spanish the word Langosta and added it in front of Jeegra to make it specific. Why should I use the English word? I suggest others do the same and eventually the language will have all the classifications Khushwant Singh says it lacks.

I personally do not mind creating such a new woirds in Punjabi Dictionary, if a large influential organisation will support me by pushing the words into Punjabi Lietrature and use?

Is there any body out there who agrres with me?

Ranjeet, a Haryanvi is someone who hails from the state of Haryana which shares the eastern border of punjab. Haryana is an agricultural state, and most of it is Hindu, and an domniant language of the state is Haryanvi. The Haryanvi people are closely related to the people of Panjab racially. Haryanvis are hard working and agressive, but very simple. Many Sikhs and Hindu Punjabis also live in the state along with Muslims. Hope you understand somewhat better now!

ALL
As regards Sikh sacrifices in Indian independence, out of 2,175 of those who died, 1,557 were Sikhs. Out of 2,646 sentenced to life on Andaman Islands, 2,147 were Sikhs. Out of 127 martyrs hanged, 92 were Sikhs. (K.S.Duggal, The Sikh people, UBS Publishers). Most of us in our first encounters with India and its history have always been exposed to Gandhi.
Regards.

By Taj on Saturday, July 08, 2000 - 5:31 am:

Sorry to bring up the Gandhi discussion late as its two months ago; Ive just checked this link lately and thought I would share my thoughts on the matter. Interesting thing to talk about though.

Ive read from Sangat Singh's 'The History of the Sikhs' that in letters between Gandhi and Master Tara Singh, Gandhi always stressed that Sikhism came from Hinduism, the latter being the 'mother' of the former. I quote, 'Sardar Ji, do you not then consider that Sikhism, Buddhism, Jainism are all rivers flowing into the same ocean' i.e. Hindutva. He would always talk the same crap in dealings with Tara Singh when Singhji would bring up the issue of assuring Sikh rights in post-colonial India. Does it remind you of an annoying old man going senile and mentally irrational?
I spoke to my mum once about Gandhi and expected an appraisal of the man, but she launched into a furore and then described how Sikhs educated in Sikh history and politics esp. agitation in 1980's were upset at how the Sikh freedom fighters, like Bhagat Singh and Shaheed Udham Singh, were 'condemned' by Gandhi and how something like 5 out of 10 Indian dissidents executed by the British were Sikhs yet us being only 1% of the population; their sacrifices were never properly appreciated. While he was spinning cotton, brave Sikhs were being tortured and executed. The Sikhs have been sidelined by the brahmin elite in the history that is Indian independence struggle.

A lot of the opinions focus on Gandhi being a political opportunist in search of the 'Bapuji of Bharat' honour, and his apparent appeasement of the Pakistani's and playing down the plight of the refugees out of Punjab and into Delhi etc. on his visit are evidence of this. The cheeky burdah even had the nerve to blame 'sardars' for the revenge attacks in Bengal and Punjab refusing to believe the much greater role played by the Arya Samaj and RSS, Hindus. It appears the man had some underlying ulterior motives with regards the Sikhs and so the olds who are 'militant' minded Sikhs are weary of the honesty of his role in Indian independence. I dont know for sure.
But I do know that young Sikhs in Punjab during Sant Bhindranvale's time and perhaps later at protests against Indira and police killings would chant, 'What did the bapu of the Hindus, Gandhi carry? A danda. What did the bapu of the Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh Ji carry? A sword'. Hows that.

On the whole, you could say he was better than most people, but very shathaan. Good legacy but suspect Hindustani.
I would be grateful if someone here could point out what he said of Guru Gobind Singh?
God bless.

By harry on Tuesday, April 11, 2000 - 11:17 pm:

I am not pro-gandhi..... he was an oppurtunist.

India was already quite unified; the socialist
movements had already created a movement which
was beyond regional barriers. the muslim league,
akali babbar's etc....were also organizations which
fought for the same thing. they were all chopping
the tree from different angles.

Gandhi was using the same tactics that ram singh kuka,
baba of the namdhari's had used some fifty plus years
earlier. Guru nanak was geat because he lived the life
of a pauper and made it his social mission to
help the down-troddened, but gandhi came up with
a quick-fix and decided to call all the "scheduled
scastes" 'HARI-JAANS'.....

GURU GOBIND SINGH WAS A MISGUIDED PATRIOT IN THEIR
EYES. The only reason gandhi gets any air-time was
because the british and he were closely aligned.....

I am giving second hand information which was told
to me by people who were closely affiliated with the
freedom movement. Other sources have come from pro-
gandhi politicians who were just giving facts

To all the Sikh look at the quotes he had to say about the Sikh and the way he dealt with Shaheed Uddam Singh. If you don't believe me just watch the movie.

By Heera on Tuesday, January 18, 2000 - 7:24 pm:

In reply to Indian:

well, I do not agree with what you have written. Although, I beleive that there is unity in numbers, at the same time I do beleive that injustice has been done on Punjab. Look at all the different partitions of Punjab - starting with Pakistan, Harayana, Jammu and Himachal. Punjab and Bengal were the 2 most dynamic states in India (before independence and even still) and both the states never supported the Congress party and as a result, only these two states were divided. People at the helm of indian politics, knew that Punjab with such a dynamic personality, would not let any one else rule the country. And again, amongst all the leaders of the country, who participated in the bifurcation of Punjab, none of them was a punjabi (On either side i.e pakistan or India). All I ask is, why only Punjab and no other State has been divided so many times. Also, every Hindu in the country is always pointing towards Muslims for the partition of India and all other existing problems in India. Remember, it was Nehru, who did not want to give up his position as PM at the time of Independence.

As far as Gandhi's philosophy of non violence is concerned, it absolutely goes against the Doctrines of every religion, including Hinduism. Remeber the Lessons of Geeta and Ramayana - one must stand up and fight against injustice. Now, if Geeta and Ramayana are correct, then Gandhi's Philosophy is wrong. I beleive that his philosophy is that of a weak man.

So, with all the due respect Mr. Indian, please look into history and injustice done to Punjab and its people, before making assumptions about living together..

Point taken

I should have said you will keep close to your Indianness by befriending Indians. But I think you msut have had bad experiences with your Indian friends if they were trying to convert you into their religion.

I have Bangali, Gujrati and Tamil friends and none of them have ever tried to enforce their religious beliefs on me. They are facinated with Sikhism and are trying to learn more about Sikhism by thier own choice.

By Piara on Wednesday, December 22, 1999 - 7:47 pm:

I think Savraj must be joking when he said that by being friends with Indians you will keep close to your culture? May I ask: what culture? Benggali culture? Assamese culture? Gujarati culture? Tamil culture? What culture? You befriend an Indian and the first thing in his mind would be how to make you into a devotee of Kali Ma or of Lord krishna or of Murugiah or what not.Or how to convince you that that knot you keep on your head is of no use and significance though the `tika` on his forehead is. So,Savrajji, think before you write. Now,I am not suggesting that you must not befriend Indians. What I am saying is that it is not true that you will be closer to our culture by befriending Indians-other than Punjabis, off course.

By INDIAN on Monday, November 01, 1999 - 7:54 pm:

Punjab is an integral part of India, how can anyone even speak of it becoming independent. It is clear that Pakistan was behind the Sikh independent movement in Punjab as it wanted to break India into pieces. But look how many Sikhs there are in the Indian army? Punjab is one of the jewels of India and so are its people. India strength lies in its diversity, both religious and ethnic. The different states of India are just as diverse as the countries of Europe but are united under the Indian flag. In India no one forces there culture on anybody else. Indians from an early age learn that theirs is a diverse country. Pakistan itself was born from the chauvenist idea that Muslims cannot live alongside non-Muslims. But even now there is continous ethnic and religious bloodshed in Pakistan between Muslims! Perhaps one day Pakistan will again join on to the motherland, but we should remain united. Punjabi's have shed their blood for the motherland time and time again. Don't let their blood go to waste.

By Savraj on Monday, November 01, 1999 - 4:28 pm:

Hi Guru

I live on the east Coast. I came here about 6 years ago. I was born and raised in India. I had the most difficult time when I came here because I was a high school student then. There were only 3 other indian people in my school beside myself. Two of them were most stuck up. But In time I made many american friends .

There are many Punjabi people living next to my town. But they are very snobbish. You know the kind of people who never had any money in India when they came here they made little money and now think they are the kings and queens and would not go out of the house unless all their fingures are covered with gold rings, and are wearing huge gold neckless and giant earings and arms are covered to elbow with gold bangles. Their childern are the same, more into fashion then education.

So you can imagine why I do not have many Punjabi friends. But I do have many Indian friends who have taught me a lot about the rest of India and they have learned about Punjab from me.

So try to make friend with Indian people in general, it will keep you close to your culture.

You kind of sound like me. When I was little I was more interested in playing than religion. I too do Path every morning and whenever I have time I try to read Sukhmani Shaib. In the evening my whole family sits together for evening prayers.

Try to go to Gurudwara again and see if you can't find any nice Punjabi people there.

Take care

By guru on Friday, October 29, 1999 - 6:22 pm:

Savraj,
I guess you are right. But please, I've tried. I used to hang out with a couple of guys here, we all went to Gudwara together, they were
cool guys, but they live far awy now. I went to Gudwara all of the time when I was younger, I do
my morning path, and my evening path. When I was little I never wanted to, but now since I'm on my own, I have to. It seems as though I cant live a nice peaceful day with out it, it helps me concentrate, and focus on what is important. I know I probably sound cheesy. Any hoo, I still have this pre-notion that most punjabis here are stuck up. I was raised in coventry U.K, the Indians in U.K were not so materialistic, rude,
or snobish. Yes snobish! I have two step sisters that were american born, they don't even talk to you unless you drive a fancy car, have show off clothes, or are popular. They dont even talk to me unless they want somthing. Suvraj, where are you?

Very funny Jatti. If you are playing a joke, you're funny. If you're serious, you're being even funnier because I have been there...my father was there all his life and believe me it ain't happening!! We Punjabis are Indian first and then Punjabi.

Wahe Guruji Ka Khalsa! Wahe Guruji Ki Fateh!

Dear Anonymous,

Paas aur Door means KolE atE ParE (pronounced as kolay atay (and) pray, KolE can also be substituted with NerHE, Door is also a Punjabi word).

"Chakk de phattey" (Pick uo the boards) is originally a Canadian Punjabi word. Most of the pioneer Punjabis in early 1900's were employed in saw mills. Chakk means Pick up, and phattey means (wooden) boards. Basically a sentence used to describe hard work also used in the context to describe finish off the impossible.

"Chakdeyange" da matlab once again literaaly means "We would pick it up". Also used to describe more commonly the phrase "We will finish it off" including finishing off your enemies.

Once again, there are many meanings to each word. Some other people may differ with me in the explanation of the words/phrase you wanted to know about. But that is what I take them as.

Hopefully this would help.

Regards,

hello E'Body,

I am looking for a course to learn Punjabi. I want to be able to speak and understand Punjabi. My focus is not to be able to read or write Punjabi rather my main focus is to be able to mix-up in a Punjabi society. I am looking for any such course in India (New Delhi) or US (New York). I know there are CD's and cassettes available to learn Spanish, English etc. I wonder if there is any such thing available for Punjabi.

I have been told that best way to learn Punjabi is to talk to Punjabi speaking person, but I feel till I know the a,b,c, d of Punjabi, its kind of difficult to initiate the conversation and to talk to anybody in a new language.

Please write at akumar- at - ssius.com for any help in this matter.

Thanks
Ajay
