why when there is a sikh man(with a turbon)in a hindi film, is he made out to be a fool?
Hindus r so arrogant and think they r the best.BUT THEY R NOT!

By Mrs_Yuvraj_Bhundel on Friday, March 11, 2005 - 9:09 am:

I think that there is no need to carry on crying about the hindi films. The khatris are the same caste as the Gurus so when they make fun of Sikhs, they are making themselves look stupid. When they use our music in their films, since hardly anyone realises that they are punjabi, they look like wannabe punjabis. They are idiots.

I don't understand though, they make fun of Sikhs, and then in 1984 they helped sikhs in the Delhi riots. I don't know whether to like them or hate them. This guy called 'Jay' is stupid enough to not see that they make fun of Sikhs in the hindi films, or maybe he is just avoiding the question, by saying that it's silly.

Why do Khatris bother identifying themselves as Punjabi?

And Isn't it funny how without the Khatris, the rest of India would have fuuck all? They talk like they're so big, but all the only good thing about the hindu India is Bollywood. Do any of the Brahmins or any other hindus realise this?

By Prabhjot on Friday, January 21, 2005 - 6:51 am:

U guys are great . Indeed sikhs do rule. Me also being a turban man i am proud to be a sikh. U are right that these hindi movies are so ***•••• man. U Wanna see a god sardar jassi sidhu is good man. LOOk at the all the UK sikhs yet these hindi movies make fake sardars. Thats indeeed stereo typing. I dont wanan be mean but these hindus think they are the best. After 1984 riots they think they could kill anybody they want. no man the truth is even if we are 2 percent of indias population but we are the most prosperous. From a statical point of view we defended our GOLDEN TEMPLE against the whole indian army still it took them 72 hours to take control of it.

REmember never ever forget OPERATION BLUE STAR
SIKHS DO RULEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

By japamexican on Monday, January 03, 2005 - 6:46 am:

Stereotyping is a global problem and here in U.S. sadly there are many stereotypes for races, as in like black people are poor and they do drugs, or
all asians should be good at math, and people who look middle eastern or have a similar skin tone must be terrorists.
Sadly people in power use stereotypes to promote themselves as in like putting other groups down.
Like the James Bond movies where the villain is always Russian (Soviet Union) or North Korean. (Pro U.S. movies)
We should educate ourselves and the people around us so we can prevent other people from being misunderstood.

By japamexican on Sunday, January 02, 2005 - 11:15 am:

There are many Panjabi (Punjabi) people who are students in my university so it isn't true that Punjabi guys aren't educated. That is a misleading stereotype.

P.S. Is it Punjabi or Panjabi?

By Bedi on Saturday, January 01, 2005 - 12:19 pm:

why do we the sikhs fail to understand the politics of Indian cinema, showing fake sikhs in the movies with turban on, c'mon don't tell me that they can't find a good sardar as an actor in India... And even when they find them, they try to put them in a funny character who is stupid, and has children who are not sikhs??? It's like making fun of our religion and we let that happen, why, because we think it's normal. Even Hollywood is accepting real sardars as can be seen in The Life Aquatic, we see Waris Ahluwalia, as a full turban and beared sikh. We should be proud of our sikh brothers. And we should find a way to stop what is happening in bollywood w/ sikhs.

By Amandeep Singh on Thursday, December 02, 2004 - 1:57 pm:

Do you think Sikhs are going a bit over the top about Sikhs in hindi movies.

Where exactly do khatris fit in. They make fun of sikhs, and the next thing they're acting like bhangras a part of them arseholes.

Some khutri told me that he thinks that I'm talking a load of crap when saying that khatris make fun of Sikhs, and does admit that bhangra isn't khutri music. But I've read on the internet that khutris attacked sikhs in 1984. I don't understand what the truth is. I tried making a website about them to see if that helps working it out, but the damn thing doesn't work.

Sometimes I think it would be alright if no gurus meant no khutris.

If a khatri wants to help me make sense of all this then you can talk to me on yahoo.

onder how long these discussions are gonna run thru. For last 5 yrs we have been discussing and discussing again. Is there any way we can work out? See the latest from bollywood. "kal ho na ho" three sikh girls, two of them sex crazy like sluts. Third one doesnt even like to look at a "sardar"'s picture whom her dadi wants her to marry. Dadi's character is again so stereotyped and sick. What the hell these ppl wanna show ???? That our girls never like to marry sikhs? they are always under family pressures? what kind of impact these kind of depictions are gonna make on the atitude of our girls towards turbaned sikhs? This was a totally sick movie. And we are not able to provide our people with any alternative to bollywood? Are these Choprhas trying to repeat what their family did in 80's. Like Lala Jagat Narayan ( These choprhas are from the same clan). OR R WE SUPPOSED TO REPEAT HISTORY AGAIN ? Like what happened to Lala Jagat Narayan ????

Let the khatris wanna be like us. They only make themselves look stupid. The brahmins can dance better than them. Don't even know how to dance, and worst of all they dance to hindi songs. What losers. The only reason there films upset me is because they're a bunch ofarseholes trying to make us look even stupider than them.
Have you seen Akshay Khanna in Hollywood Bolly woood trying to dance to bhangra? He makes a complete fool of himself, but the khutris probably think they're experts. They make more fun of siksh than anyone else.
Where khutris involved in the 1984 attacks on Sikhs?

By Bollalawood on Wednesday, February 18, 2004 - 7:57 am:

Bollywood Producers & Sikh Bigotry

Bigotry against Sikhs and Jats is repeated ad-nauseam in khatri-made bollywood movies. Every movie has that stereotypical 10 second script where "Mr. Malhotra puts down a thick-headed Sardar" (e.g. recently, Bhagwan made by Chopra; Hollywood-Bollywood; etc.).

After trying to destroy, suppress and denigrate Punjabiyat for the past 100 year, the same fanatical Punjabi lalas are now-days ripping of tunes and songs from the Sikh/Jat (agri)culture of Punjab, including bhangra, in hindi films!

All this nefarious social propaganda advanced by our "ancient 1877" Arya-Samaji lalas betray a deep-seeded "inferiority complex" and an inability to come to terms with their history.

The plain facts of history are that Punjab, Rajasthan and western UP was under the rule and control of Jats, Rajputs and Sikhs (70% Jats) before the British arrived here in 1830-50s. Afghan historians only refer to "wars with Jats" in Punjab during 10-11th century and with "Rajputs" in Rajasthan. There is no mention of any "lala warriors" - although the empire of "hattistan" has to be conceded to them. Rajputs have been traced to 6th century Huns and Jats to Sakas who established the great Saka-Buddhist empires of the Chastana-Satraps, Kushanas and Virkas (e.g.Harshavardhan of "Virk" Jat clan) from 200BC-800AD in northern India (read B.S. Dehiya, "Jats the Ancient Rulers").

It may be more appropriate to call bollywood "bollalawood"!

Dear Bollalawood

Your resentment and protest is quite valid yet you fail to understand that social progress and our internal understanding of life will propel us to change our personal and collective attitude. Once that is done all these ignorant people will modify their scripts.

The scripts written by social systems are changed automatically when a society is awakened.

Well i agree with most ya ppl...except i think hindi movies r cool...betta than gora films. But i strongly agree the punjabi's are portrayed really bad. BTW i'm punjabi sikh. They make us look like fools, like we're so dumb and we know nothing. They're so hipocritical, firstly we're made out like losers, then they sing songs like punjabi no.1 and stuff. Anyway most of the music in hindi films is punjabi nowadays anyway. I don't think that hindi film directors realise that punjabi's r really successful, anyway punjab is like the richest state in India. Us punjabi's have the best music, look at sukhbir, stereonation, jazzy b and so on. And our movies aren't that bad either, for instance jee aayan nu. WELL I BASICALLY WANTED TO SAY THAT PUNJABI'S RULE AND THOSE HINDI FILM DIRECTORS SHOULD GET THAT INTO THEIR HEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By Joshila on Thursday, July 31, 2003 - 1:11 pm:

I have heard that many actresses even famous ones sleep for money with rich people on the side. Is it true? Dharmendra slept with many actresses in his youth even though his wife Parkash Kaur was busy making roti at home.

By saira on Thursday, July 17, 2003 - 12:54 pm:

bobby deol

i agree with your statements: the film industry is very pathetic and is run by low lives, and corrupt actors and actresses. regarding your comment on the "fair" actresses....yes they are lighter than many indians, but this is with th help of a whole lotta makeup! i went backstage once after a show in nyc....oh goodness! the actresses are much darker in real life. i met rani mukherjee, she was quite dark and had real bad skin... and honestly, i love aish, but she is not as light too. karishma was real fair tho...
ahhh but who cares??? the industry stinks period. i wish the movies had more intelligence

By Booby Deol on Wednesday, July 16, 2003 - 6:51 pm:

I don't think any of us should complain about the lack of Sikhs in Bollywood movies. The percentage of Sikhs in Bollywood movies should be around the same percentage of Sikhs in India, which we all know is very very tiny. So how can we expect Sikhs to "take over" the Bollywood industry ? LOL !! Likewise, there are much more Muslims and Hindus in India, so it makes sense that that they represent a larger presence in Bollywood movies. If one day Sikhs were to become a majority in India, then I would expect Sikhs to rule Bollywood, but as if that day will ever come, unless we start doing it like rabbits.

On a different note, I think Bollywood movies are a complete joke. The vast majority of the Indian population are very dark skinned, so then why are all Bollywood actors / actresses fair skinned ? The next time you watch a Bollywood movie, pay special attention to the dance scenes. The lead dancer is fair skinned, and the background dancers are all dark. We have to face the fact that Indians have a self-hatred problem.

By Anonymous on Wednesday, July 16, 2003 - 6:51 pm:

I am a muslim girl and i observe indian movies and the people in them. First off, i can't stand sunny deol although bobby deol is okay. Esha Deol is just plain ugly but my mom told me their dad was good looking.
Secondly, Sikhs are presented very badly in movies usually as some stupid, dumb clownlike guy. The other extreme is an extremely patriotic guy who is almost always played by sunny deol.
Thirdly, i have heard that ajay devgan is a sikh and amitabh bachchan has a sikh mother.
Lastly, sikhs might be underrepresented in movies but there are many femina miss india contestants who are sikh.

By Kim on Friday, July 11, 2003 - 5:12 am:

Guys,

Actually Hindi movies are made for the coolies, rickshaw drivers, slum dewellers, homeless, hopeless, nothing much to do in life, i mean have too much of time in hand, and maybe people who like to Fantasize.

I may argue that these movies keep the social peace of a community as they get satisfaction from these 4 hours movies. Also one may add their discussion may last for a few weeks until a new Hindi movie comes along.

So you see Indian actors are doing an excellent job keeping society in check. Just imagine what else and how else and where else are the poor folks going to past their time .

One last point these movies keep us occupied with this discussion. I always wonder where they pluck the titles of these movies.

I'm a Sikh, not a Hindu. In fact, none of the information in your post minus the blatent curses is true about me. I never said Punjabi's weren't great or have achieved little. All I said were that the Deols were talentless fuglies, which they are in my opinion.

I'm not sure what made Manwhore burst into a tirade, but whatever it is, it must have hurt him badly. Lets face it, the Bollywood industry has become a whore. All people care about is about who can show the most kisses, sex, or skin to make money. indian actors/actress only care for money. they endorse everything possible and only want to go to Hollywood so they get paid $12 million a picture, because as we all know India is a third world country and producers don't have $12 million to pay Ash, so instead she endorses watches, pagers, sodas. The industry has lost its values, the music, the movies are made to make money, there is nothing of value in them. however, every once in a while we will get good movies that tell of India's pride (Border) but those are few to come by. indian actors and actress do not make tons of money. Big B made Forbes list of richest Indian actors in 2001 only because of his endorsements and game show. his income barely crossed the 1 million mark.

the indian film industry can make a billion movies a year, but if they all are done poorly, who cares?? the movies are so dumb and pathetic, same story every movie, same little whore outfits, same overdone makeup, same women trying to look white, but can't, same love nonsense, same girls running around trees, and a thousand girls dancing in the background
dont get me wrong, many movies are good: eg lagaan, well, there are many classics.

india, and Punjab, has soo many beautiful faces, i couldn't count. yet, so much of the industry is run by corrupt actors and actresses who have family ties, and just disgrace our culture.
india has some brilliant people, i wish they used this brilliance in making different movies: ones that represented indian, and Punjabi culture more, than just having an annoying Bengali actress scream "number one Punjabi" with that fugly (haha pac u were rite) bobby deol...

Punjabi culture is rich, and is being distorted by cheap actors, and actresses, and hopeless storylines!

Sorry Bollywood Lovers,

The theme of all the movies are basically the same.
Eg, man meets woman, in comes a villian and after some songs and fights all is forgiven even the villians who have killed gets a free life, man Marries woman.End product MARRIAGE

eg, woman meets man the rest as above.
eg, man fights for country meets woman, rest as above
eg, woman fights for country, rest as above.
eg, Devdas (man meetswoman)same as above and so simple. No explanation

To make it shot all as above

As for Sikhs, you guys are so lucky that your Gurus were intelligent enough to make you people so enterprising that you seem to be found all over the world.

You British Sikhs came out with "Bent it like Beckham' excellent movie. Really fun to watch.
Keep up the good entertainment. You don't need Bollwood, soon they will come to you.

By kssethi on Thursday, April 10, 2003 - 3:34 pm:

Sanj,

I agree there are not enough Sikh actors in Bollywood. As for Poonam Dhillon and Neetu Singh, they didn't have great careers or any awards to their name. There are defintely not any Christan actors and there will probably never will be for a long time, but the fact remains that Punabis (mostly Punjabi Hindus) and Muslims control the movie industry, from Dilip Kumar, Meena Kumari, Madhubala, Mumtaz, Shaabana Azmi, Javed Avtar, SRK, Aamir, Salman, Fardeen, Saif, Nasir Hussain (Aamir's uncle), Mohammed Rafi, the list goes on, there are tons of Muslims in the movie industry and they control it, its the Sikhs time, when will we take over?

By Sanj on Thursday, April 10, 2003 - 5:29 am:

Its all about talent. i doubt actors and actresses are chosen due to their background. I mean look Aamir, Shah Rukh and Salman they are huge stars in Bollywood despite the Gujerat riots and the earlier riots in Mumbai. The Deols are hug stars, they are Sikhs. Sunny Deol has a massive fan following, so did his father. A little further back in time Poonam Dhillon and Neetu Singh were big actresses as well.
I think its more the case that there not enough Sikh characters in Bollywood movies, but then there are not many Muslim or Christian characters either. The vast vast majority of Hindi films show the main characters as Hindus. I myself would like to see a NON-historical Hindi movie where a Sikh character (who could be played by anyone) is the hero.

By kssethi on Wednesday, April 09, 2003 - 10:20 am:

dear 3Pac,
I agree with you too, Sikhs are portrayed in a bad manner. While I liked Gadar, I felt that many people probably thought of Sikhs now as people who go around screaming. As for Esha Deol, I wonder if she is even Sikh, since she is more like her mother, Hema Malini who is Hindu and Dharemendra's second wife. Also I love Dharemendra, I too think he is awesome and rocks, he was the best figure for Sikhs, with his great looks, and his box office appeal, until he got fat. But, doesn't it bother you when you have friends or see movies that portray Sikhs in a bad manner, what can we do to change this?

By 3Pac on Wednesday, April 09, 2003 - 8:52 am:

I'm a Sikh and I like Hindi films too. But most of them are terrible. Only a few are worth watching. Yes, Sikhs are usually potrayed in a negative light in films. It appears mainstream India thinks of Sikhs in this manner. However, I've seen recent films where it seems like those things are changing.

I think the Deol kids ••••. The only film any Deol kid has made that is worth watching is Gadar. And the last 30 minutes of that film was crap, in my opinion. Sunny is ugly, and Bobby is uglier. Esha can be cute at times but thats only with a lot of makup, cool clothes, and a great song. The kids are living off there father's success, I don't believe they have much talent. Dharminder was THE MAN! I give him all the props he deserves.

everyone,
I just one thing to say to everyone, i love hindi films, we have some of the best actress, actors, and filmmakers, like Raj Kapoor, the greatest showman of the century. But, i am also a sikh, and i am disguisted at the way sikhs are portrayed. we are not sidekicks, people to be made fun of, we are the backbone of the indian army, and can anyone name any sikh female actress who have made it big in hindi films, the deols are great, but when people think of them, they think "ahhhhhhhhhhh". i have friends that are so freaking sterotypical of sikhs, needless to say, i'm not friends with them, but what can we do to get people to stop making fun of sikhs?

Here is an article:-

BIRTH AND DEATH OF JESUS - PROVED

Many people know that Jesus was born of a Virgin in the manger of an Inn situated in Bethlehem, the birth place of king David, the lion of Judah tribe, and He died a very humiliating death on the cross at a place much haunted and feared by people. But why it happened so?

Why the Virgin Birth? - The answer is very simple to the twice-born people of "spirit", who are capable of "perceiving" and “intuition” based upon logical reasoning. At the same time it is well beyond the apprehension of the once-born people of "flesh", who are capable of "seeing" only and they believe what they could see or prove in material terms or scientifically. Thus, they take the Holy Books by the "letters". No wonder such people are also called the “people of Book” and they address Super Servant Christ Jesus as Lord Jesus Christ so that they could Lord over the others in His name.

Prophet Jesus, the First anointed Christ (Satguru) of God was to appear among the people of Judah tribe who at the times of king David were highly religious people and had a good knowledge of the Holy Books such as Torahs. They used to obey the moral laws of Moses to the very "letters" and for their religious devotions; they were called the "angelic people" or DEVTAS. But the act of "adultery" by king David was a "sin" that put the people of Judah tribe to a great "shame".

In reading these messages I have come to conclude one thing:
Religion can easily be taken to an extreme level.
Be proud of your religion, and of who you are, but please don't not infringe your views on the views of others. Through pushing certain religious symbols, practices, and even mind-sets- many of you have come to forget the true essence of religion.
Is religion not a sense of spirituality, oneness and tranquility? Why does it matter if a person has their hair a certain length or wears a metal bangle?

Do not become confused with technicalities. Be accepting and caring people, and the rest with fall into place.

By BROTHER S SINGH on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 9:05 am:

Dear brothers and sisters:

Hearty congratulations on the birth anniversary of our
Guru Nanak Dev Ji. One who is loved and revered by all.

My Message: All over the world, get involved with your
communities and develop a BUMPER STICKER, which can
direct people to a specific website for knowledge about
our religion.

This will be a powerful tool, and if we can inform the world about our religion, it will eliminate a lot of ignorance and hatred.

Just imagine MILLIONS of cars displaying a quote about Sikhism and a website directing people to visit and learn more about us, all over the world.

This will be the best gift we can give ourselves on the 533rd birth anniversary of our Guru Ji.

Select a Bumper sticker wisely, which gives a specific
view of Sikhism regarding universal brotherhood, and then a Website, which best informs the general public.

This should be done by Sikh communities in every nation of the world. We must make this grass roots movement for education about our religion.

Good Luck.

GRACE — favor or kindness shown without regard to the worth or merit of the one who receives it and in spite of what that person deserves. Grace is one of the key attributes of God. The Lord God is “merciful and gracious, long-suffering, and abounding in goodness and truth. Therefore, grace is almost always associated with mercy, love, compassion, and patience.

Grace, however, must be accompanied by faith; a person must trust in the mercy and favor of God, even while it is undeserved.

Hello everyone,

I live in New York and I am surprised to find so much anguish that some sikhs have for no-sikhs. I am a hindu and whenever we see some one who is a sikh, the first reaction that come to our mind is,"oh its so good to see another indian". For me and my friends we never see sikhs as someone different from us. and as far as feeling discriminated because of some bollywood stereotypes then take with a pinch of salt. bollywood is known for its exhagerations. look at the movie Devdas, it no way represents bengali culture, the movie is so far fetched. comeone we all are Indians first and then anything else. you know I am willing to accept that some muslims may feel that Hindus do not like them, but I am surprised to know that hindus can ever dislike sikhs. its all in your mind.

good wishes

By BROTHER S. SINGH on Friday, November 15, 2002 - 6:48 am:

Message for Sikh Boys and Girls.

I have read these posts and I can not believe the apathetic sentiments about turbaned Sikhs. The fact of the matter is that turbaned Sikhs have a personality which is unmatched. I am a turbaned Sikh, and I have many other friends who were cut hair Sikhs, who have now decided to maintain their hair and turbans.
I can tell you that they have killer looks which they could never achieve before.
Their personality is magnetic and very zabardast.

They maintain a neat appearance in clothing, grooming and manners. They are also confident about their professions and business. They range from computer engineers, to doctors and Lawyers to taxi drivers and factory workers.

Confidence is the key. They exude confidence and this gives them a magnetic personality.
They have healthy and fulfilled lives with their wives and girlfriends.

Fundamental points for boys and girls of my religion:

1. You have allowed the society , media and movies
to determine what is acceptable and what is
not. This allows others to assimilate you into
their own culture, and reduce you to nothing.
This shows weakness of mind and will, and it
must changed.

2. Girls:Regardless of your ideals, chances are you have the best chance for a successful marriage
with a Sikh, just as a Hindu woman stands with
Hindu man, and a Muslim with a Muslim. Just look
at the matrimonial ads.

3. It is a mistaken belief that turbaned Sikh does
not look good. A neatly dressed confident man is
good looking in all races and religions. No
race or religion has a monopoly on beauty,
integrity, intelligence, success or honesty. We
all possess these qualities.

4. A turbaned Sikh has something much more.
He has a sense of pride, which can not be
bought or borrowed. Just as one can not be
successful in business without confidence,
so too, a man can not be successful in
society without it. I can tell you that as
a turbaned sikh, I have enjoyed everything NY
has to offer. Through out my life,
wherever I went, I had all types of women
from all races come on to me. From white,
to black, Indian, Hispanic, Chinese and
those who were of mixed races, yet I
fell in love with a Sikh woman, and I
am very satisfied and happy.

5. Boys: Here is a secret Sikh girls know,
which you should also. Sikh girls know that
we come from a blessed Punjab. A land whose'
earth ( mitti) gives birth to the most handsome
of men. Gabhroo Chobbar Jawaan, who are unmatched
by any one, and they have no intention of
settling their lives with anyone else but you.
Why would they, when the best already belongs
to them. They do not need to be impressed by
you, they are already in love with your being.
They will not go anywhere else, but come to you.
Just look at the matrimonial ads. Now that you
know this, why should you cut your hair, to
satisfy their mistaken beliefs. Tell them to
accept you as you are. Believe me, if this is
done in a united way, we can bring about a
change in their thinking, and ultimately the
course of sikhism which has taken a downturn
in the last few years.

6. Girls: Know this. A self respecting man is
worth a hundred who have no convictions. A
turbaned Sikh represents a proud self
respecting man, who lives life to its'
fullest. Chances are he has religion on his
mind and heart. CHANCES ARE THAT A HOME WHERE
GOD DWELLS, THERE WILL BE GREATER CHANCE OF
FIDELITY, AND TRUST. THE GREATEST JEWELLRY
WHICH A WOMAN WEARS IS NOT MADE OF GOLD OR SILVER,
BUT LOYALTY ( WAFADARI) OF HER HUSBAND.
Knowing this, you also know that nothing can
stop you from living and loving to your fullest.
Enjoy all that life has to offer. Do not let
anyone or anything put limitations on it.
Go out with your Sikh man, and enjoy life not
by hiding and evading, but in bold and proud way.

7. Boys: History is repeating itself, and we must
not let this happen. In 1675 when Guru Teg
Bahadur Ji was executed, there were many Sikhs
who could have come forward, but they did not
because no one knew who was a Sikh and who was
not. In a huge gathering of Sikhs no one stepped
forward to save Guru Ji. Today, many turbaned
Sikhs feel the same way. As we live in our towns,
We have huge number of Sikhs, yet because so many
have cut hair, turbaned Sikhs feel lonely and
betrayed. If all Sikhs maintained their hair,
wore Patka or Turbans, we would have a Sea of
Sikhs in these communities. As we present
ourselves in masses, problems which exist today
will vanish like the wind. As employers see
us as we are, we will not have difficulty in
jobs as we do today. Socially everywhere, when
Sikhs abound, they will be accepted and become
a total part of everyday life in the city.
Politically, in our communities, Sikh leaders will
start to make their concerns known, and make a
difference for the betterment of our people.
This one act of united courage can bring a change
in how we are perceived, how we live, and what
we can achieve. It will also unite us, which is so
desperately needed.

8. LEARN ABOUT SIKHISM: we wear Khanda on our chains and on back of cars
and yet we can not even name the ten Gurus. Sikhism
does not mean just adopting symbols, but knowing
who we are. Go the libraries, websites and
learn about our Gurus, our warriors, our martyrs.
Know and learn gurbani. Know of the sacrifices of
our people and what they gave up, so that we could
live. EVERY HUMAN BEING GETS ONLY ONE CHANCE FOR
A LIFE. JUST THINK ABOUT WHO GAVE IT UP SO YOU
COULD LIVE IN PRIDE AND FREEDOM. We have reduced
their efforts to wearing Khandas on our necks and
cars. Bhangra has become our new religion in
place of Sikhism. Bhangra has its own place, but
it must not dislodge Sikhism. It has done so.
We can enjoy Bhangra, and display khanda proudly,
but not at the cost of Sikhism. We can do all at
the same time. Our entertainers in all fields
have a tremendous impact and responsibility. Look
at Harbhajan Singh in cricket. He is some one to
BE VERY PROUD OF AND WE ARE. Jyoti Randhawa who led
Dunhill golf Championship for two days was on
international TV for two solid days. Imagine if
were turbaned, what it would have meant for Sikhs.
Other Sikh golfers like Jeev Milkha Singh and
Arjun Atwal who are at the verge of international
stardom can become such good role models for the
Sikhs. Write to them and encourage them to maintain
hair and wear turbans. It will not eliminate
lucrative endorsement contracts for them as they
may believe. Look at Daler Mehndi and Malkit
Singh. I am very proud of them. Other Singers who
wear turbans are also making us very proud , and
who do not should be encouraged to do so.

9. Boys and Girls: You are the future of our
religion and our people. You are so lucky to
have been born into such a functionally modern
religion which is supposed to do away with
castes and religious hierarchy. Despite this,
message boards are full of cast toting posts
which take our attention away from our real
problems. Put an end to it. A Sikh is a Sikh
and that is all. When our Dharam is in jeopardy
does cast matter? Look at the real problem of
our boys and girls giving up their sikh
appearances. This is our collective battle.
Let us bring a change in our thinking. Let us
turn this tide. Let us bring a Revolution in our
thinking. A wave( a sangharsh) in for our
collective good. For those brave and courageous
people who laid their lives for us, are we men
or sheep. Girls encourage our men to be men, do not
ask them to be weak. Do not blackmail them into
cowardice. Men take control of your future and
your lives. Do not let anyone, even sikh women
dictate your resolve and commitment.
If possible, tomorrow, go to your job with
a turban and let your employer know who you
are. If he harasses you or fires you, take
legal action. Nothing comes to the weak.
In your neighborhoods and communities, be on
the vanguard of this revolution. Be the leaders
and your friends and relatives will follow.
From one corner of this world to another, let
us bring our Sikhism back.

DO NOT LET ANYONE TELL YOU TO HATE HIDUISM OR
ISLAM. BOTH OF THESE GREAT RELIGIONS ARE AN
INTEGRAL PART OF SIKHISM.

BE TRUE PROUD SIKHS, AND MOST OF ALL, LIVE
LIKE MEN DO.

By BROTHER S SINGH on Thursday, November 14, 2002 - 12:18 pm:

Do not allow views of others to chnage who you are.

The reason Sikhs are made fun of is very simple.
When you have a race you can not defeat or out perform, the only alternative is to make hapless comments about them or ridicule them.
Sikhs are great at what ever they had to do.
From our beginning, we have endured hardship for ourselves and others, and despite this we are the best of farmers. We have produced doctors, engineers , lawyers, businessmen, and inventors who have impacted the world in avery positive way.

Sikhs will die before they beg for food.

Sikhs are extremely enterprising, and have gone to new lands and made tremendous successes of themselves. This takes guts and intelligence. Make no mistake about it. We live life with gusto and vigor.

On top of this, our people come from a land where most handsome and most beuatiful women are born. We took a
barron Punjab and made it green. We taught people of Haryana and UP to improve their agriculture. We did this without any help from anyone. During fight for independence, our people made the most sacrifices and
showed the greatest of courage.

Who would not be jealous of such an accomplished people.

Jealousy is what makes others make fun of us. Jealousy of our success, and our undying ability to
persevere and thrive against all odds.

Do not let movies or people change your views about yourselves.

If you do, then you have fallen prey to propaganda.

Clap, Clap...Good Job my Paki and Indian friends. What a great picture you guys are presenting to the world. I am a sikh and "till today" I was extremely proud to be my self and my place of origin (irrespectve of my religion.) I must say some of you need acute psycho-treatment. You know what? Guys like you all are the ones who make sure to pick fight and bring bad name to their religion. Unfortunately, ppl like you happen to exist in all religions. I just wish that human beings like you ceased to exist. I am surprised and shaken to the bones....Never, never in my life had I imagined that the there is so much hatred in this beautiful world.
All of you here boast of being Good Sikhs, Hindus, Pakistanis and Christians, but have you guys ever paid any heed to the teachings of your leaders?
If you believe in the almighty then why in the world are you guys bent upon on destroying his own assets which happens to be nature and ppl from all religions. So please try and helps others in making the world a better place. I know that this message of mine is not going to make much of a difference to most of you, but this is exactly where the suttle point resides. A combined effort is the only solution to this problem. Please ..please for a pleading brother...try to look at the world with the eyes of love and I assure you that never again will you think of others in a bad way.
With Love and hugs to you all,
a brother

Islam is the root of all the problems and wars in this world. Just think, if there was no islam how much peace there would be. Just look at the wars in the middle east, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine, Pakistan. All muslim countries

It seems to me that all these so called soldiers who fight with the excuse of 'Jihad' don't even know what they are fighting for anymore. They can kill as many non-muslims as they want but they will never win. In fact they themselves are creating further hatred towards Islam by undertaking all these riduculous suicide attacks and so forth. Then they complain that people are being racist towards them.

I admit that there are some decent muslims out there but people like 'Pakistani Pathan' need to be shot because they seem to have absolutely no idea what they are talking about.

Hair seems to be more important than God. It is as though having uncut hair has become another blind ritual. Cut or uncut hair is now the new castes. I know hate and intolerance, I have been reared in a religion that has hated as much as it has loved. One thing I know is that God loves the seeker, and has much patience for those that presume to know the only way. The color of our skin, the money in our pocket, or the length of our hair is in my opinion not what God sees when God looks at us. I still see a beautiful religion but i also see one that has confused God with culture.

Satshirikal all,
Especially my Sikh brothers and sisters!
Well you know the problem with us Sikhs? On the name of being liberal we are people without any convuictions!
Including myself at times, I am clean-shaven and I find people trying to tell me it's fine now I have got enough of a conscience to say its not! and by cutting it in a way I have forgotten Dashmeshpita's Sahibzadas' sacrifices, Bhai Taru Singh's sacrifices and so on.
I find as far as entertainment is concerened we degrade ourselves! that apology of an author "Dukhwant Singh" was the first to start making fun of Sikhs, then Daler Mehndi that circus-clown with his band of jokers has further got us insulted.
Now Sunny Deol's portrayal in Gadar wasnt showing Sikhs great, and I have great arguments with some guys in India who try to say Sikhs are portrayed well.
Infact there were few issues which need to be brought out clearly:
(1)Sunny Deol was ready to convert to Islam but not ready to say Hindustan murdabad? This was an insult of sacrifices of the past, which were made against forcible conversions.
(2)Plus it was portarayed as if Sikhs and Hindus are same, hell they arenot!
Sunny Deol was referred to as Hindu time and again to
as Hindu.
Theres this new movie of which I saw a trilor directed by a Sikh Mahinder Dhaliwal called Ma tujhe salaam, this has many flaws while the anthem of the Sikh nationaliy "Dehe-shiva ber mohe eh" is being played Sunny is boeing infront of some Godess, our eligion strictly prohibits such idol-worship
Guys now these small issues but the majority Hindu nation has been successful in Hindusing our religion by using caste-factor and other social issues, Bollywood seems the next.
While I am clean-shaven and admit it's wrong nobody can prevent me from speaking up for the Sikh religion, bcoz I was born a Sikh and will die one!it is time for all Sikhs to unite under one banner and forget our divisiosn for god's sake. Our religion is truly democratic and there should bespace for every Sikh to speak, but it should not mean outsiders sneak into it an start setting standards for us.!

Portrayal of sikhs in Hindi movies:

The posts below which convey the perception that sikhs' roles in Indian cinema and Tv serials does not extend much beyond a charlie chaplin parody, are sadly mistaken.

Fukin hell, have you forgotten gadar. What the hell was the point of making sikhs and hindus alike. Fuk that shit. A jatt shouting out - hindustan zindabad, and then the pakis comparing and always referrign the jat as a hindu. Yeah right!!! That's bull shit. Sikhs are getting a real positive image, overall, anyway. Fuk this, hindi soap operas are the worst. They show that families have no restrictions whne a sikhni marries a hindu or vice versa, but there are restrictions for hindu-muslim or sikh muslim marriages. There are thousands of examples of attempts in our cinemas to assimilate sikhs and hindus. And you guys cry over piss skitz of sardars in movies. No one gives a shit for the good portrayals sardaars are given in movies. A sardaar is never a villain, but muslims frequently are!!!

All you punjus are gay!!! Sikhs and punjabi hindus alike. I don't give a fuk for you guys. you are disgraceful people. Your arguemetns are gay. I think we should stop creating such positive images for sikhs. there is no need for us to assimilate the sikhs. If they don't like India etc, bhard me jao. In other words get lost. This actually goes to anybody else as well. Fuk wheter u are hindu or not, get lost if bithc about India.

It is interesting the piece of news I read in the Times yesterday that people of Indian origin in West London do not want to be called Asians any more. They want to be called Hindus or Sikh etc. because to them Asians is associated with Islamic terrorists!!! I wonder if people from Pakistan should be called Paki so that they are not associated with muslim extremists?

By Anonymous on Wednesday, December 26, 2001 - 6:10 am:

you see paki muslims do not like sikhs very much.
Before 1947, there were over 4 million sikhs living in pakistan and now there are less than 5000.
And just read the newspapers about the situation of sikhs in pakistan. Sikh women in peshawar can't leave there homes because the mullahs say that it is duty of a muslim to "forcibaly marry a non muslim women (aka rape), and then convert her to islam.

By singhan da munda on Tuesday, December 25, 2001 - 5:15 pm:

why do punjabi hindus or hindus hate pakistanis or muslims but act like sikhs are "brothers." They wouldn't have been proud to call themselves hindu punjabis in time of turmoil. Also they are always trying to get sikhs against muslims and always have a fat grudge against pakistant. I mean look at indias political actions....i like pakistan more.

People...wake up!!! India is a culturally and religiously diverse country. No matter what religion we are...we have a common ground that is we come from an extrodinary country...India. That is why we have had so many invaders in the past...The Dutch, Portugese, Greeks, Moguls, British and so on. All Indians regardless of religion....Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Parsee, Buddhist, Jain, Christian should unite and rejoice that we have such a tolerant and democratic country. We can't change the past, we can't predict the future but we can live the present in peace. So all of us Indians should seek unity amongst ourselves...after all...we originate from one of the most beautiful country's in the world.

By Anonymous on Friday, October 26, 2001 - 11:24 pm:

Take it racism or not, but this thing is surely changing the psychology of our generation. It seems that to have a sikh "or SARDAR" in a hindi movie and then make him do some "charli chaplin" type act to add "some comedy" has become a standard.
I am not in US. I stay in a hostel in Mumbai. And feel how the situation has changed in just three years. When I came in 1998 from Punjab, I never had this feeling. Infact being from Punjab was a proud thing. And now its impossible for me to watch a movie with others. Whats the need of that scene in "mission Kashmir"? First we were "sardarji" then "sardar" and now "surdi". Now these people find every thing funny related to us.
They say many other characters are shown like that(south indians, biharis etc.). But they are not one in lakh. This thing matters the most. We can be recognised in lakhs. So those acts very fastly get related to whole community. What abt "Gadar"? whos willing to remember that?
So far racism is concerned, not always but many times yes, I have felt that. But whats the solution. I suggest the best solution is that dont take this lightly as afriendly thing. Dont smile at these jokes to show ur broadmindness. because the people who make these kind of jokes are rhemselves narrow minded.please discuss this topic.

By Fear on Thursday, October 25, 2001 - 12:32 pm:

Does anybody here talk about what the subject really is about? how are sikh's portrayed in hindi movies? is it really racism, are we sikhs really being put down. what can we do about this?
I went down and read many of the things that were written, and really i was absolutly amazed at how people can talk to each other like this. Have respect and people will respect you back. everyone is talking about racism this and racism that, and how this is better then that. but if we actually looked at the over all picture, all we need is respect for one another and there would be no racism. so if everyone just stopped swearing at everyone else and tried to understand what the other is saying wouldn't it be a lot easier? if everyone just learned their own religion, and abide by what their religion says, but at the same time not put down other religions, wouldn't everyone be happier? almost every religion i've read about or looked into... no where in that religion does it say bad mouth and bash this other religion as much as you can. it says respect them cus God is one people.... Stop breaking up his family. Let everyone just stay together....

By HARVEYPOWER on Thursday, October 04, 2001 - 9:38 am:

Western Fick,
I am not an expert, but I will try to give you an interpretation of the Sikh religion, and the philosophical side. Hopefully u woun't fall a sleep:

Unlike the Hindu, Christianity, or Muslim Religions, the Sikh religion is a relatively new religion about 500+ years old. The Sikh relgion was created as result of Hindu and Muslim conflict. As such, a man named Nanak, now known as Guru Nanak formed the Sikh Religion, inwhich Guru Nanak basically incorporated Muslim and Hindu ideology. And it went something like this:

Like Hindus we believe in reincarnation and KARMA (What goes around basically comes around)....

Like Muslims we forbid the use of IDOLS and believe in ONLY ONE GOD. However he is definately not MR. Mohammed Alah. But we know he/she exits.

GURU NANAK MAIN MESSAGE WAS THAT WE AS HUMANS HAVE THE DUTY TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER INCLUDING ANIMALS AND SHARE, (Which we practice in langaars, where poeple cook and feed communities)

And u might want to know that after some study of the religion, I noted that we have something similar to the TEN COMMANDMENTS, thou shall not lie, commit adultery, kill ect.. And like the Buddasim religion we reject all caste systems, (BUT THE PEOPLE DO NOT FOLLOW GURU NANAK"S TEACHING)because caste system is very alive in the punjabi culture. However true Sikhs do believe in rejecting the caste system. That will take some time.

Now u might want to ask why do Sikh men wear turbans or kucha (long shorts) and sword ect, Well after some years GURU NANAK JI passed away, the MUSLIMS wanted to convert every SIKH to their religion, and they wanted to anilate us just like the Europeans did to the Native Americans (red indians). Well a brave man name Gobind Singh who i shall refer to Guru Gorbind, save us from the hands of the bad guys (not all muslims are bad: refering to the ones that wanted to kill us) and basically created us into a warrior lords. He had a code of ethics and code of honor which included to control anger, jealousy all whole bunch of things. And he created men to protect Sikhism from dying and exiting this world. WE WERE VICORIOUS!!!! (FACT- DID U KNOW SIKH MEN WERE PROTECTING THE POPE IN ROME DURING THE FOURTIES?) Now back to my intial explanation to the turban ect. At that time GURU Gobind Singh wanted us to be recogized so he created the Turban (which is a great helmet by the way if you fall off the bike) and at that time Hindus shave their heads, so we could be distinguished ( u know there is millions of indians in India) and the Hindu priests wore G-Strings so Guru GOBIND said it was indecent so demanded all men wear shorts (THANK GOD) and the steal bracelet was originally worn to protect the right arm in battle (to bad for the left handers) and the sword is worn to protect the truth which many sikhs like myself would die for.

SO Guru Nanak and the other nine Gurus were brilliant men and like the KIRTON SOHILA says in the last sentance, " Nanak daas e-hae sukh maagne mokou ker suntun kee dhooray," which means Nanak too begs for that comfort which could make him the dust of the Saints Feet. THATS ALL FOLKS!!!!!!!!!!

And why are you on this site? Oops I forgot you mentioned it in your last response...So are you that stupid that your capping on your self? LOOSER WITH A BIG L.

Western Flick, I believe in Jesus Christ, that he was a man influenced by GOD, and that he died for our sins, and he was the son of GOD, but are we all not children of GOD? Moreover, I believe that no human being ever born on this planet has the power or knowledge to tell us who is GOD. The sikh religion says that GOD may have a thousand forms or one form, we will not know until we have a chance to meet him/her or it. I know GOD is one huge form of pure love, like a baby first comes into this world, its funny how that image is corrupted when exiting this world. But the bottom line is THERE IS ONE GOD whether u call him (her or it) as JESUS CHRIST, MOHAMMED, BUDDAH. I just know that GOD is the supreme master of the Universe, and whose to say there is only one Universe, there could be hundreds. So look at the big blue sky and ask your self who are we? AND is JESUS CHRIST REALLY THE SUPREME MASTER? IF you believe so then good for u, but I am so happy to be a sikh because it is extremely logical.

Sexypunjabichick... Who would call themselves such a name unless they were starving for attention and are ignorant sluts. If I were you sexypunjabichick, I would go watch a few dozen crappy movies with Punjabi bullshit actors as punishment for your lack of respect of older people.

In Genesis, Ishamel was cursed while Isaac was blessed. If any muslim or hindu wants, I have proof of the Bible's authenticity and truth about who Jesus was and what he did for sinners. I respect other religion beliefs, but some things are just outrageous. I mean comeon, Hindus worship stupid Blue elephants and Vishnu with many arms. Who made that shit up?

Muslims, you say that Jesus was but a wise teacher in your scriptures. At least you acknowledge that he lived. Well, he is the son of God, prophesied from the Old Testament, descendant of David, the King of Kings. The Bible that we have today is the same that the Jewish scriptures have. Nothing has been changed for years. All the geographic references where Jesus has been, not one has been disproved by archaoelogy.

Jesus died on the Cross for our sins. He is the only God that took human shape and suffered life as a man of the world. Only a loving God would do this for all humans.

I challenge anyone to bring proof against Jesus. Can anyone provide evidence that Jesus never existed. I will discuss with anyone who wants to argue with me.

Hello my fellow friends including Christine,

Some Chistians beleive Jesus Christ is God, son of God or a simple man. And some Muslims think Mohamamad is God, and finally Krishna beleivers think he is God. Now I will tell you why I am so thankful that I am a Sikh. In our Granth Sahib, (Our holy bible....Christine) God has no faces, and our Granth Sahib is very clear that we as humans have no idea what God looks like or who he or she is, and even goes on to say that he may have a thousand forms or one form. Furthermore GOD is one, and has a tie with every one for he/she/it is the supreme being...the master of our hearts. I love this concept, because it is the only logical concept that exists. For you Christine to put down somebody for their relegion is un-American, and very foolish, I think real Christians would never utter such nonsense. I am not going to put down for being christine, but i will put you dowm for being a dumb idiot girl that needs to get an education and a man because you will not make it on your own for you need guidence, and another brain. So please for the LOVE OF HUMANITY CHANGE YOUR WICKED WAYS, and as for you Punjabi Jatt Queen, you should be more lady like, because saying such disgusting words his very low class, and the only class you had was Chuuree class, but love each other and Christine get a life.

But unlike you, I will respect Christianity, and respect the fact that in the end we are all puppets of only one almighty God that loves all his children ( Jesus Christ is not the only child of god) with all their flaws--which is the sikh mantra. AN EMPTY PITCHER MAKES NOISE

Life would be boring without jokes. We all crack jokes... In India, most of the jokes, for some years now are
being cracked on the Sikhs. There are these 12 o'clock jokes, Banta Singh-Santa Singh jokes, Giani Zail Singh
jokes, Baldev Singh jokes, Khalistan jokes...the list is endless.

Picture yourself as a Sikh and look for an honest response from within yourself.would you be able to handle
these day in day out of cracks targeted at you by colleagues/friends/the unknown person standing next to
you/anyone and everyone taking the liberty. I know your immediate reaction..."sure man, it's only a joke." You
are absolutely right, it is only a joke. However when a joke enters the bloodstream as a cancerous virus and
you get targeted daily, right from your childhood, let me tell you, as much as you believe you can, the fact is you
will not be able to handle them.

On the other hand, look at the Sikhs. Have you ever seen anyone of them getting irritated with these digs &
cracks on them. You wouldn't have. Ever thought why they don't get effected? Well the answer lies in a
couplet by Saint Kabeer :

Kaho Kabir chucha ghat bole. Bhariya hoe so kabahu na dole.

Says Kabeer, an empty pitcher makes noise. But that which is full, makes no sound.

Sikhs by nature are self-respecting, courageous, hardworking and enterprising. Look into their short span of
history and you will find their pitcher is full of sacrifices and hardwork which has contributed so much towards
the nation building. If not for them, the course of Indian History would have been very different. That's what
makes them the SPIRIT BORN PEOPLE and gives the ability to simply ignore the digs targeted at them.
Volumes could be written on the contributions made by the Sikhs, who constitute less than 2% of Indian
population. I am listing below just a few, which should make my friends start thinking...

· Sikhs have always believed in the right of an individual to practice a religion of his own choice and have
always fought against tyranny. Jahangir, the 4th Mughal ruler wrote in his memoirs, Tuzak-i-Jahangiri about
Arjan Dev, the 5th Sikh Guru, "..for a long time the thought had been presenting itself to me that he should be
bought to the fold of Islam..". In 1606, when the Guru refused the forceful conversion, he was put to death by
boiling in a cauldron and sitting on a hot iron plate.

· Aurangzeb, the 6th Mughal ruler was a fanatic ruler who desired to convert every Indian to Islam. Tyrannized
by his forceful conversions, a delegation of Kashmiri Brahmins in 1675, approached Tegh Bahadur, the 9th
Guru of the Sikhs. He offered to sacrifice his life for their cause. This was a unique & unparalleled sacrifice in
the annals of human history. He laid down his life in defence of religious tolerance, of freedom of worship, and
freedom of conscience. He gave his life so that the Hindu's right to wear the sacred thread is not violated
despite the fact that Sikhs themselves did not believe in these rituals. This was a martyrdom for the defence of
basic human values.

· For about 7 centuries, since the invasion of Mahmud Ghazni in the 10th century, many ruthless invaders
played havoc with the life of Indians. Recurring defeats had sapped the psychic energy of the Indians so much
that they had resigned themselves to their fate. It was Gobind Singh, the 10th Guru of the Sikhs who imbibed
the fearlessness amongst the Sikhs to fight against all odds. He wrote to Aurangzeb saying "when all means
have failed, it is right to pick up the sword". In the year 1699 he proclaimed, "call me by the name of Gobind
Singh, only if i succeed in making the sparrows (Indians) fight against the Hawks (mighty foreign rulers) and
am able to make one Sikh fight against an army of one Lakh". He set himself against oppression and
intolerance. He did not fight against any territory or worldly power, or against any religion or sect. He made
nationalism the religion of Sikhs. Apart from the numerous Sikhs who lost their life in defence of the country
under him, his 2 sons were martyred on the

battleground, while the other 2 preferred to be bricked alive than give up their esteem. In 1709 he left this world
with a lifetime of heroic events which changed the History of India.

· Bulle Shah, a celebrated Sufi Muslim Saint has said, "I neither say of the past, nor of the future, but i talk of the
time of Guru Gobind Singh & declare openly. That but for him, all the Indians would have been circumscribed
and converted to a foreign culture and religion".

· In 1710, Banda Singh Bahadur was the first Indian to re-establish Indian rule after 7 centuries of foreign rule
in India, post a fierce battle with the forces of Aurangzeb, although this was short lived.

· Between 1713 and 1801 the Sikhs were homeless and living as Guerillas, demonstrating heroic acts of
courage at every possible instance. The tyrant rulers had put a reward of Rs. 25/= for every Sikh head and Rs.
100/= for every Sikh caught alive. Those caught alive would be cut to pieces. Many new vocabulory (of which
many jokes against Sikhs are made nowdays) were given currency among the Sikh guerillas which showed
with what brave face and heart they had accepted the challenge of their persecutors.

· In 1738 Nadir Shah, the Persian ruler invaded India from Kabul and went on a rampage upto Delhi. He
returned to Persia in summer of 1739 and carried back a huge booty of looted wealth, Kohinoor diamond,
women, artisans and slaves. To avoid the summer heat, the convoy would rest during the day and travel in the
night. At the peak of the day heat at 12 noon, the Sikh guerillas started attacking his convoy right from Punjab
upto the Indus. They freed many women, artisans, slaves and deprived him of large amount of wealth. The
women were escorted back to Delhi by the Sikhs. It was for this heroic act, which no one else dared, of fighting
against the might of Nadir Shah by a handful of Sikhs and freeing the women, that the Sikhs started getting seen
as people who go mad at 12 Noon and therefore the 12 o' clock jokes of nowdays. When Nadir Shah asked
Zakhariya Khan " who these barbarians where and where they lived", Zakhariya replied " they are the
followers of Nanak & live on saddles of their horses".

· Post the return of Nadir Shah to Persia, Zakhariya Khan went on a rampage against the Sikh movement and
killed 10,000 of them in a few days.

· Between 1748 & 1765, Ahmad Shah Abdali the ruler from Afghanistan rampaged India 9 times. Again the
Sikhs attacked his returning convoys during the peak summer heat and freed 2200 women and escorted them
back to their homes. Yet again a heroic act at 12 noon, which unfortunately the others perceived as a
maddening act and therefore further strengthened the 12 noon syndrome. These acts of Sikhs aggravated
Ahmed shah Abdali, who swore to take revenge at an appropriate time. During his 6th invasion he caught the
Sikhs unaware and 25,000 of them were killed in a few days. But the spirit of the Sikhs remained high as one
Nihang Sikh of that time commented "only the soft and unbaked ones of us have fallen off".

· Finally, Sikhs under Ranjit Singh, in 1798 bought to an end the 800 years of foreign invasions into India through
Khyber pass, by bringing it under their control. This was the best gift the Sikhs gave to the nation which finally
allowed the rest of India to breathe in peace. Hari Singh Nalwa, who manned the Khyber pass for years
became a household name in Afghanistan. Even today, the Afghani mothers put their children to sleep with the
threat of Hari Singh Nalwas name.

· It was Ranjit Singh who bought back to India, the world famous Kohinoor diamond, which was looted by
Nadir Shah earlier.

· If not for the Sikhs, who captured Kashmir in 1819, today it would have been a part of Afghanistan.

· Ladakh, which earlier was a part of Tibet, owes its existence on the map of India to Zorawar Singh, who
captured it in 1836.

· Sikhs were the last to surrender to the British in the sub-continent and were the first to raise arms against
them.

· After 2 bloody Anglo-Sikh wars did British manage to annexe Punjab as the last kingdom on the map of
British-India Empire. It is an irony of fate that the Sikhs had to fight against their own countrymen as British
forces in saving Punjab from British annexation. It was not due to lack of soldiers courage & conviction that the
wars against British were lost, but a treachery by Gulab, the Dogra primeminister under Ranjit Singh, who
joined hands with the British in exchange for the title of Kashmir on winning the war. British records say about
the Sikhs "..such a mass of men, fierce and untamed in their dying struggle, who fought like Lions and ran right
on the bayonets and struck on their assailants when they were transfixed".

· Inspite of the loss of empire to British, the spirit of freedom amongst Sikhs was soaring high. Whereas the
British would daily fire a canon at 12 noon by the East India Co. time, which was the Calcutta time, the Sikhs on
the other hand refused to recognize the British time. There is a one and a half hour time difference between
Calcutta and Lahore time and therefore the Sikhs maintained their firing of the Canon at 12 noon Lahore time.
Amongst the general public there was a confusion as to which canon denoted the 12 noon and therefore at the
fire of the first canon the public would say "12 o clock of British" and on the second fire, an hour and a half later,
they would say "12 o clock of Sikhs." Soon the spirit of defiance and freedom was forgotten by fellow Indians
and they started linking the madness demonstrated by them during Nadir Shah and Abdalis invasions at 12
noon to the act of defiance during British period and there took place the 12 o clock jokes.

· Much before 1919, when Mahatma Gandhi issued the call for satyagraha (boycotting English goods), the
Sikhs under Baba Ram Singh had started the boycott movement in the year 1863. Eighty two Sikhs were tied to
canons & blown apart by British.

· Sikhs were the only Indian community to be internationally acclaimed as early as 1897, for their heroism and
valour. Where in the history of warfare can you find the instance of heroism as demonstrated by 22 Sikh
soldiers manning the signal post of Saragahi in Nort-West province with no ammunition back up. All the 22 of
them fought till the last bullet had been fired against an Afghan army of 7000 warriors. The 22 soldiers then
charged with their kirpans to be eventually cut down to pieces. The easier way out would have been to
surrender but the spirit of Sikhs has always made them do what Gobind Singh, the 10th Guru had said, "Grant
me this boon, O Lord, at last when the end of life is near, I may die fighting in the battlefield for the sake of
righteousness".

· The first battle for freedom from British was won by Sikhs, when after loss of many lives in 1929 they were
able to take over the charge of their shrines from British. On this victory Mahatma Gandhi sent a telegram
saying " THE FIRST DECISIVE BATTLE OF INDEPENDENCE OF INDIA WON -
CONGRATULATIONS".

· Where in the world can you find an act of sacrifice like that of Sikhs in 1922, willing to offer lives of their wives,
children and themselves by lying on the rails to stop a train of freedom fighters who only had to be fed because
they were hungry. The train finally stopped after killing a few Sikhs.

· Not many can claim the valour with which Bhagat Singh offered himself at the altar of Indias' freedom in
1931.

· There is not another instance of bravery as shown by Udham Singh in 1940, when he went to London and
shot dead Sir Michael O' Dwyer at a public meeting, as a revenge for the Jallianwala massacre.

· Out of 42,000 recruits in the Indian National Army under the command of Subhash Chandra Bose, 28,000
soldiers contributing 67% of strength, were Sikhs.

· Contribution of Sikhs who are less than 2% of Indias population , in the freedom struggle of India against the
British.

Book source : "History of Indian National Congress".

· Partition of India in 1947 brought innumerable death to Sikhs and was the greatest disaster known in the
Indian history. Surely the Sikhs paid the heaviest price for the freedom of the country.

· Punjab lost its most fertile part to Pakistan during the partition. However, today due to hard labour of Sikh
farmers, the Punjab in India produces much higher quantities of foodgrain than the fertile Punjab in Pakistan.
Punjab contributes 40% of rice and 51% of wheat into the central pool of foodgrains in India.

· Post partition, many of the landless Sikhs who settled in the jungles of Terai in Uttar Pradesh have today made
the area as fertile as Punjab.

· Contribution of Sikhs towards the Indian Defence Services is the highest with respect to their 2% population
size. This community has also won the maximum number of gallantary awards since independence - 5 Param
Vir Chakras (PVCs), 40 Maha Vir Chakras (MVCs), 209 Vir Chakras (VrCs).

· During the emergency of 1975 imposed by Indira Gandhi, no organized protest was made across the country
by any section of community, except for the Sikhs who conducted daily morchas, involving 40,000 arrests.

· You will never find a Sikh ever begging on the roads, inspite of being uprooted & made homeless many a
times, they have demonstrated the ability to rise back from the scratch. Each one of them actively contributes
towards the nation building. Almost 30 years ago, Professor Milton Friedman (Noble Prize Winner) an
American Economist, on his visit to India had humourously remarked, "Lease out India to the Sikhs for a while
and there will be no problem of development". Could there be any greater compliment to the Sikh spirit and
enterprise.

Inspite of endless contibutions made by Sikhs towards the nation building, our friends find them to be a laughing
stock. Well, it makes no difference to the Sikhs as their pitchers are filled with unparalleled acts.

As a nation we may lack the sense of humour but Sikhs are a rare species, with a great sense of humour. This
is the community which has learnt to fight, succeed and laugh.

It is time for my friends to do a bit of introspection.
