I assume that there have been more before me, who have searched for a way to reclaim their heritage (i.e. learn their language). I am from Iceland,but spent some years in Punjab and learnt to speak Punjabi.I am married to a practising Sikh,a proper Sardar Ji,we now live in Iceland.However I miss the free open attitudes and culture that I experienced in the Punjab.

We are trying all our best to teach our children Punjabi. They are practising Sikhs too.We use Computers and books and tapes,basically whatever we can.There are about 15 Punjabi families,all Sikh, in Iceland,we meet once a month for our Path and Kirtan.My children speak good Punjabi.For all those out there ,if you really try you can speak the language,Punjabi is I think the MOST beautiful language.

I am punjabi by birth and love the language a, it is my mothertounge and b, i can read my sikh scriptures which are written in Punjabi/Gurmukhi script.

Punjabi is a beautiful language of India derived from mother of Indian languages, Sanskrit. If you can already read Hindi, reading Punjabi should be relatively easy. Inter-act with as many Punjabis as possible and you will lean to speak at a greater rate. Good Luck!

As for Teaching them Sikhism, ANd I do not say this to insult anyone, but most Sikhs do not know that much about their religion. They are the first to admit it. They go to the gurdwara,bow down before Guru Granth Sahib, take parshad, and go home. In the Gurdwara I go to IN the USA, they really try to teach you about the beliefs. I go to the Gurdwara more than my husband. In fact my Enthusiasm to learn encourages him also. I do not know that much as it takes along time to learn even a fraction of the vast Indian and sikh beliefs and culture, but I try my best. Not to praise myself , but I find myself explaing indian concepts to Indian girls who moved to THe USA when they were very young. Their moms complain that they should be more of a traditional Indian , like me. I am not giving up my culture. I studied Spanish and love aspects of all cultures and my life is rich and fuller because of it.I believe that there is one God who does not label us, we label ourselves. Since Sept 11, I have seen so many banners saying "God bless america". I see myself as a citizen of the world and not just an American. So,"God bless The World." Big bad jat, you need to get over the past. You can not judge every white because of what the English did. You make it a crutch and an excuse for prejudice.

The best way to learn is through implementation. Tell your boyfriend that you ONLY want to communicate in Punjabi. It will get frustrating for him to keep translating for you, but if he loves you he will do it. Or if all the time is too much, set aside a period where you guys only communicate in Punjabi. If you notice, Punjabi's raised outside of Punjab speak the best Punjabi if that's all they speak in the house.

I am just fascinated by Punjabi, and I can speak a bit, par meri punjabi inni changi nahi hegi, te es karke main twaddi site utte aaya. Is there someone who can gimme corresponding words from Hindi to Punjabi, so that I can try forming sentences. I mean, I want to say "Agar maine poochha to aap mujhse naraaz to nahi ho jaaoge" in Punjabi, but I cant, because I do not know how to say "Agar","TO", "SE" (Hindi words) in Punjabi.... Can someone please help me, or atleast guide me to a place where I can find such a dictionary........

Hi whoever said its spelt Punjabi...that is the spelling of the english colonial masters they couldn't pronounce it properly.....so its better to spell it as Panjabi otherwise it looks as if its pronounced Poonjabi as the english used to call us....

I could read punjabi write punjabi and I could speak punjabi and hindi I could only speak hindi, what can't write.
I been living here in nyc for seven years.
What try to learn to write hindi/when i try i have no idea what to write.

Kidhaan? I went through a similar thing. I learnt to read+write hindi first,and then panjabi.
First things first,DO NOT learn it from a "English to Panjabi" book, because they are shit,and it will only confuse you.See if there are "Hindi to Panjabi" books.
The texts are very very similar indeed.Personally,I think the speaking part is more difficult than the reading/writing bit.
The same numerals/digits are used but are swapped around a bit.For instance, in hindi the "gh" (used for ghar) is the panjabi "b"(used for baba). The "g" (used for ganda) is the same in both.The "p" (used for panj) in panjabi is the same as the "th" (used for thermos) in hindi.
