By Hutch on Tuesday, December 05, 2000 - 11:43 pm:

This is what I wrote for Burning Punjab which I htink is a very brave effort by a felow SIkh in highlighting the state of Punjanb and the Punjabis.

Its a website which is objective and a very good way for Punjabis all around the world to treat as a forum for the reawakening of the Punjabi psyche.

Pleae email me to share your views too.

I must state that I was gratified to hear that the role of intellectuals has been discussed
as being important to the rise of the Sikh nation. But the blame for the defeat of the Sikh
psyche all throughout the years until Operation Blustar lies with the Sikhs. Sikhs seem to
have been cought in a karmic bind in which their history seems to be awashed with their
blood and others.

It is time to erase the attachement ot the sword and rely much on the
pen because the pen is mightier than the sword though the sword can still be used.
When Sikhs have used fire to fight fire this has resulted in a conflagaration from time to
time. The martial and matryic tradition though noble should not be the only way with the
use of the sword. It is time to rethink our strategy. Rather than take the bull by its horns, it
is advisable to start from its tail. Like the Jews the Sikhs worldwide must statr passive
resistance.

Thus we should not raise loud voices in support of Khalistan as in the past
this has led to suffering and death for our co-religionists in the the hinterland. Rather
money, innovation, investments, ideas, new mindsets should so flood and transform
Punjab that over time the awaited revolution can be started from within.

If all sections of
Punjab society can fathom and apprciate the winds of change then they can rise as one
and achive our dream as an independent state. Secondly the platform we use for
independence should be Punjabi not Sikh. Subtly all punjabis from Pakistan and India to
the rest of the world should wake up to the clarion call.

Also the punjab profile should
rise so highly in the minds of the US and Europe that they will see us as indispensable
and thus support our cause. Why not have a Punjab musueum where the atrocities
against Punjabis can be showcased very objectively.

Also we should not lose track of the reality ogf the contemporary times we live in. Allow
all screened good ideas in the form of spiritual enlightened groups, organisations, ideas
etc flood punjab. This will tame the heat of Sikh passion and over attachement for their
history which should not make them lose their minds anymore. Also punjabis will develop
especially spiritually with current thinking and when these groups are established, it is a
spiritual investment. Sikh religion can take centrestage in spiritual ideals together with
other universal organisations that work for world peace and world consciousness.

Thus
environmenatalism will come to the doors of the Punjab. Allow English to spread and
thus make us very strong in tapping into world culture while contributing our traditions to
the English speaking world through translations. Allow the saints to orchestrate the
revival of unbias, universal Sikhism-get back to the older purer ways. For example ther
is no meditation technique that is actually taught to anyone-it only seems to be kirtan and
simran without explaining the rationale. Lets change this. Let ther be philosophical
debates within the boundaries of propiety. Educate the masses and the corrupt leaders
will start shaking even if the earthwuake is far away. Unite all SIkh sects under the
banner of universalism. The nirmalas, the nirankaris, the nihangs will fade away soon if
something is not done to tap into their resources and rejuvenate tehm back into the fold
of Sikhism as all can contribute in their own ways. Write critical magazines on the Sikh
nation, Punjabihood etc.

Make sure the Arts develop because the Arts are the voice of
the people. If we want Sikhs outside Punjab to carry on their way of life peacefull even
after Khalistan, let the pen do the work of independence. And take only the main part of
Punjab as our territory first, the rest shall follow later. Tap into th eminds and the psyches
of Sikhs worldwide. Please let me know in whatever way I can be of service to the Sikh
nation.

Lets share and rebuild our destinies.

Yours truly
H. Singh

Sat Shri Akaal to all

This is a good page for the sikhs to interact between them professionally , I mean without fighting or using abusive languages. You know this was what went missing after the khalsa rule . The quam was taken over by over pride and less confident in them until they even let the slaves rule them. I like to say some thing here which i think will benefit all the sikhs around the world. There is no punjab without punjabi values, so what makes punjab is punjab. It is the value of the punjabi quam . Grow these value in everone of us and let the others excapt the value , this one day might turn the whole world in to a punjab....what say you about this.

We only look and propagate the bad value of punjabi/punjab, try the good ones also.. I think the result will be much more batter. Sikhism is new religion, every sikhs any where in the world must play an important role of interducing this great religion to others.

Kuldip Singh Ji,

You just need to relax buddy and start the conversation like everyone else. You have posted the same message at a lot of different pages. I understand you are new in the US, you miss India a lot, and of course you are looking for your friend you lost four years ago. Do you have any contact with your friend's parents? Maybe you can contact them and find out where your friend is or maybe you can contact some common friends. So, where im Ludhiana do you live? I don't know much about Ludhiana but maybe someone else from Ludhiana will respond. You also have an option to start a page on Ludhiana. Do you know Sahir Ludhianvi by any chance?

Take care bro and enjoy the chat just like everyone else. If you can't find your friend, try making more friends around you in real life.

Sat sri akal to all
Jinder Paji it was great to read your posting on Vaisaki. You expressed the very same sentiments as myself. Sikhism is a great and very modern religon if one can understand it without all the culture which is imposed upon it.
A good site on objectively assessing religon found by me is one done by a Dr Chahal from Canada. We ought to and I know I am proud of our Guru.
Having said that it does NOT mean that I am some sort of highly religous person or something, being a Sikh is one part of many which make me who I am, and being a Sikh can co-exist within modern life by providing another perspective on life. Also this gives one another tool in making better decisions.
So having said all that I would like to wish everyone a peaceful and prosperous Vaisaki.

By Jinder Singh on Tuesday, April 04, 2000 - 2:48 am:

Vaisakhi nu thuhanu lakh lakh vadhayian hove. Happy Vaisakhi to all Sikh brothers and sisters around the globe. We have much to be proud of as we have come this far still standing after 500 years of great achievement as well as terrible persecution-par assi hajje vi kharde hage ne. There is much to do yet as many sikhs are ignorant of their rich, exceptional history, achievements and traditions e.g. dowry at weddings, caste divisions, national betrayal, fights, and yes, apne smoking and drinking, acting like animals, not going gurudwara on Vaisakhi (please avoid West London!!). But the main point is we are still here after all that. Sikhi started more than 500 years ago, and still 500 years later it is still a thousand years ahead of its' time; it offers democracy, human rights, fairness, women's rights, equality, honour, struggle, meaning, all that is great about life. God has chosen the sikhs to be given the gurbani revealed to the Guru's, so come on, pick up the books, talk among yourselves, get interested, stand up and take notice. Give much love, gain inspiration, stick together, and ask yourselves what can you do for our nation. With our identity, pride and religion, all sikhs should be grateful for being sikh since we are exceptional. On Vaisakhi, do your giddha, bhangra, boli, prayers, visits, but dont forget that great day 300 years ago. Spread love, strive forever more towards piety and nationhood on Earth and our place in Heaven. Sikhs in Canada, UK, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, Thailand, India, USA, Sikhs all over the world-God bless.
Appo vichi pyar rakho.
Vaheguru ji ka Khalsa, Vaheguru ji ki fateh.

Is there any way that i can learn punjabi?

By Anonymous on Tuesday, May 25, 1999 - 5:47 am:

Sat-sri-akal
I am a Sikh born in New Zealand. Punjabis have been here for over 100 years now. As the fourth generation of my family I am still very much Punjabi. Growing up in a context where you have a different religon from others means you are questioned about your beliefs and what they really mean. I have found that contrary to foreign critiscims of all things not western being outdated and old fashioned, that the Sikh religon has intrinsic values which will never be outdated like truth being the highest value.

In reference to the discussion on English and Punjabi languages being at separate Gurudwaras I feel this is not the correct solution and the problem should be identified first. I would suggest that the problem is ensuring future generations recognise the value of the religon. Many younger people are put off by the bickering that can occur. Take the issue of the tables and chairs. Many people have a feeling that its hardly an issue in comparison to issues we must face in a increasingly complex society. I do not just mean Punjabi society but the whole cultural context of the western society where we live.

It should be a supportive community of family and friends to which one can come to at a Gurudwars. To keep people who do not understand that much Punjabi involved in services main things like Aardas, and the Raamkali Mahala 3 could be printed in romanised punjabi script with their English translation beside it so people know what they are saying. Participating in Kirtan on Sundays becomes a lot more meaningful then.

Seeya Mate! and remember Always - Do It Desi Style
Long live the Bhangara Beat. God Bless You All

It always hurts to read/listen some thing silly about any community, religion and organisation. Sikhs in Australia trying to observe norms and diciplines laid for sikh. We should work to improve our self through positive criticism them throwing mud every where. Sikhism is not only for punjabies or sikhs only. It is for everyone who has faith in sikhism irrespect of origin, cast, creed and colour

1 Vaisakhi in Melbourne
Report by Harjinder Singh
We the Melbournian Sikhs-celebrated 300 year of Khalsa on 10th April
1999.The celebrations were organised by the Sikh Tri-Centenary Celebrations
Committee an apex body of all the Sikh Organisations in Victoria. The
procession started with the welcome of the Guests and other participants in
Storey Hall of RMIT. Among the guests were- Ms Senator Kay Patterson
Parliamentary Secretary to Mr Phillip Ruddock Federal Minister of
Immigration and Multicultural Affairs, Mr David Davis MLA, Representative
of Mr Jeff Kennett, Premier of Victoria, Mr Pat Power Deputy Leader of
Opposition of Victoria, Revered Bishop Micheal Challen Exective Director,
Brootherhood of Saint Laurence, Mr Basil Varghese, Education Cooordinator,
Brootherhood of Saint Laurence, Mr Chin Tan Commissioner, Victorian
Multicultural Commission, Ms Kerry Gartland Group Manager, Humanitarian and
Educational Services of Victorian Branch of Australian Red Cross, Mrs
Margaret Moonee Chairperson, Faith Communities, The City of Greater
Dandenong, Mr Tim Singh Councillor, Darebin City Council. After the Welcome,
a shabad-Deh shiva var mohe iehe was sung by the Kirtani Jatha. A lecture on
the brief history of the Sikhs was delivered followed by presentation of
Siropas to the guests. The inaugural session ended with Ardaas with English
translation. After that the city procession was organised in Swanston Street
- the main city walkway. It was the first time in the history of Australia
that one kilometre long procession was organised. According to 1996 census
there are 3000 Sikhs in Victoria State but the procession defied these
figures. Sikhs from Griffith, Shepparton, Mildura and Adelaide had also come
to participate. It was all safron and blue that dominated the Streetscape.
The procession started at 11.50 am. In the front were the four National
Flags two of Australia and two of the Sikhs, then a jute carrying a Nagara
followed by Panj Pyaras in traditional safron dresses, five Sikhs in
traditional blue dresses and five Young ladies in white dresses with safron
chuni(carrying Nishan sahibs). There were five more equally dispersed jutes
each carrying Kirtan Jathas named after the Panj Pyaras of 1699. Traditional
banners as wall as others like "Sikhs love Australia" were also carried .Any
reference to India was totally missing. Many persons were also filming the
Procession. Some Hindu families also participated in the procession. The
procession ended after a distance of two kilometers in Alexandra Park-the
main city park with the display of Gatka and Ardaas for the World Peace and
Guru ka langar at about 2.30 pm. It a was rare occasion when I saw the faces
of Sikhs with full of glow, cheerfullness and confidence. Most of the people
were feeling as if they are in Punjab. On the other side no body was
observing the traffic rules and the police officers fad to remind the people
every time. No body was moving in the lines. However the event has really
given us a feeling of togetherness, a sense that we also exist in
Australia-a wonderful country. I believe the event was really an important
one in the History of Sikhs in Australia. We hope and pray for the success
of the forthcoming similar processions being organised in Sydney on
18.4.1999 and in Griffith on 17th April.

2 Vaisakhi in Sydney
Report by Satnam Singh Bajwa
The procession here yesterday was a big success. It started from
Town Hall passed through George Street(main street in the city) and
ended up at Circular Quay, Around 7000 (Sydney Morning Herald),
shardhalu participated dressed in kesari, blue, and many other
colours. The procession was led by panj piaras, followed by Guru
Granth Sahib on a truck. Among the marshals to control the
discipline were two sikh police officers who were deputed
especialy for this occasion. One side of the road was closed
for the public for two hours.
The lights were put to permanent green and still people gave way
to the right turning oncoming traffic, although the traffic was
not supposed to make a right turn or cross during the procession
time, so your suggestion saved a lot of embarrassment. The
procession started with a press release, continued with the kirtan,
there were many small parties having their own dholki chaine, after
reaching circular quay there was gatka item which was very well
organised, the procession ended with ardas. Every body felt very
proud and confident and I heard many people saying that we should
celebrate at least one guupub a year. Among the participants there
were many hindu families.
It is the first time that committees of all the four guruduaras came
together at a single platform to celebrate the event, but still many
important faces were missing due to ego problem. Each and every body
from different committees was seemed keen in getting credit for the
occasion, so they divided the important occasions like press release,
thanks, welcome etc. Speakers were not selected depending upon
their ability to address the public but according to their position
in respective guruduaras. On the day of Vaisakhi there was full day
celebration at Parklea Guruduara, in the evening Minister of

In the Sikh Gurudwaras here in Australia, a new trend has started. In order to get more teenageers into Gurudwara the ragis has started introducing English language service in Gurudwaras. Using Guitars and what not it sounds like a pop show in the making.

You can lure teenagers into Gurudwaras this way but you can't create spitualism into anybody.

I strongly feel that this should not be allowed. If unchecked it could create a rift among gurudwaras, In the future there might be two type of gurudwaras- One with Punjabi Service and One with English Service.

The parents will go to the Punjabi Service and the kids might go the English service.

Now the argument given in favour of using English is that their kids identify with English better than Punjabi and would be more at ease if they listen to the Kirtan in English.

If the same logic is accepted then in the future we might have McDonalds and Pizzas served in Lungar- well of course our youngsters feel much at ease with them , isn't it.

Please give it a thought.

We must let some evolution to take place. The choice we face is either the younger generation understands bani or not. No matter what the language is or the medium is, we must keep them interested. May be we should show some flexibility. To tie the religion to the language is dogmatic.

To Mr Singh

I would hate to say this and by no means wish to
offend you in any way. However with comments such
as the one about regarding english and punjabi
services in Australia, you are one hundred percent
wrong. When making comments such as this
please provide valid examples as you have not only
misinformed others reading your comments about
Gurdwara's in Australia, but also given the impression that we like Mcdonalds and Pizza Hut....(which on a personal note, I refuse to eat).

Please also take into consideration, given the politics that have taken over the world in our religion (like sitting on the floor or tables) this is a very minute problem that we are all facing today. Even in the event that this was happening, please appreciate that these tennagers still believe in God...and they know their fundamentals of Sikhism. Which in most cases is the major problem a lot of other religions are facing with there young teenagers.

Lets nut out the larger issues facing Sikhism before we start worrying about things that are not happening in Austrsalia.

Any further comments are appreciated
