I bet that if PUNJABIS were together and not screw each other, we would be today a nation of 150 million richest people of Asia. See how the homogenous cultures like Japanese, Koreans and Germans have performed. They also have different religious beliefs but they are not foolish like us. Sorry atleast one Punjabi herewith is accepting the historical truth that we are a community which never learns from our mistakes but we keep making more and more of them thereby making us a poor lot.

If we do not open our eyes we will remain as scattered and broken as we are without any identification. We are not going to achieve anything by making ourselves weaker by dividing further and hating each other but accept the fact that Punjab is a great nation with all colors, all beliefs and all sub-cultures. That day when we accept that fact, true progress will start. I guarantee you that ignorant politicians in Pakistan and India will learn this fact only after 10 more wars, after screwing our remaining resources, by killing atleast 5 million more Punjabis and then on the barren and NUKED lands, we will be playing cricket.
I call upon all my friends to open up and give a wake up call to our ignorant friends. If you think i am crazy than you have no idea on the usefulness of history.
Wiser people learn from their mistakes. Idiots keep doing them.

Advantages of a Global Punjab
By being together, we can discuss our past, think about future, think about making money and thus prospering our community, helping budding business people, providing a network to great geniuses and talents of our community.

We have seen how destructive and dangerous it is to divide a community and see it decline in Punjab in last many hundred years. CAN we learn something of past. Can we make it better? Yes we can. If you we are really ready we can. Punjabis have never attempted to think of all of us as a networked community as the walls created by our ancestors, who lived in tiny villages, were tall enough to breathe such impossible ideas. Let us work hard to educate our community leaders, our country legislatures and other educated lots that divided we are piece of a tiny dot on the map and together we are very powerful.

Punjab of future?

A progressive Punjabi, wherever he may live in whichever condition, is trying hard to survive the onslaught of extremists and bigots who impose their narrow-minded mentality in the name of past and history. We believe that Punjab's future is more important than past. And Punjabis can ONLY grow if we shed our idiotic divisions and foolish village mentality which has divided us so much that even among a subcaste there are further divisions. Thats nothing but a shame.

Please do not trample the majority of Punjabis living in Pakistan, India, UK and Americas - who just want to be better economically and socially.
We appeal to all upwardly mobile Punjabis to join us and express ourselves as a global homogenous community with one voice and let us face the truth and learn from it. Punjab's leaders meet in India
The chief minister of the Pakistani province of Punjab has made a key visit to the Indian state of Punjab.
Pakistan's chief minister Chaudray Pervez Ilaahi and Indian counterpart Amarinder Singh vowed to build greater goodwill among Punjabis on both sides.

But Mr Ilaahi said major issues between the two countries - such as the Kashmir conflict - would have to be resolved before closer ties could be forged.

Punjab was split in the Partition of India in 1947.


Reciprocal trip


Mr Ilaahi and Mr Singh met in Indian Punjab's capital, Chandigarh.

Mr Ilaahi's visit has been seen as a continuation of the current peace process between India and Pakistan.

Mr Singh made a visit to Pakistan earlier this year.

On Sunday, Mr Ilaahi is due to open the first ever inter-Punjab games tournament.

What is the alternative to a democratic system? - I do not know but what I do know is that a democratic political system can only work for the benefit of the people if the base voter is able to make a reasoned choice between alternative political parties and strategies. It is unrealistic to treat India as a true democracy when in the past it has resorted to mob rule on numerous occasions - with the persecution of minorities. A true civilisation aknowledges the rights of all and especially of the culturally 'different'. The Buddhists, moslems, christians and sikhs have all tasted mob rule with no sight of justice.

How can one voice be heard in the midst of so many.

You say nothing has been achieved by violence but I disagree. The Palestine question is only on the lips of all world leaders due to violence. Ethnic minorities were saved from genocide by violence in Yugoslavia with the subsequent establishment of countries based on ethnicity and of course the most powerful nation ever to walk the face of the earth, the USA, was born out of violence.

You say that not many Punjabies want an independent Punjab. I cannot disagree more, revolution still brims under the barrel of a hinustani soldiers gun. They only keep the peace by intimidation and torture, you would be a fool to speak your true mind in such an environment.

I have taken note of many of the comments made in your editorial, and I respect your breadth of knowledge. You cannot refute the fact that historically the Punjab and the peoples of the punjab have taken it upon themselves to protect the defenceless against oppression throughout history. In many of these circumstances mediation has simply not been enough and pro active resistance has had to be utilised. Yesterdays terrorists and agitators are todays leaders.

The current situation in the Punjab is dire. What has the government achieved in 50 years of independence? - there has been no economic growth, and without economic growth you cannot have cultural growth. The government is more concerned with corruption and retention of office. The population being 90% uneducated is easliy led and therefore manipulated with ease by the few ruling classes.

I put it to you that Punjab and ALL the hard working law abiding people of the punjab are being slowly bled by a democratic system which has failed them.

I have come across this site during my efforts to tell the world about the work of my organisation in Punjab of India. I have read most of the opinions given in the string below and found that many of our Punjabi friends indulge in puerile and emotive visions about independent punjab. This is funny and totally anachronistic. The world is moving from the small community to the world community. It is good to be a Punjabi and to acuire Punjabi socialisation with all that self-fulfilling prophecy type of being aggressive to sell oneself et.al. But it is absolutely foolish to find new meanings of sectarian nature in the past records or sayings or history. Punjabis being a forward-looking people should believe in the assertion: We donot belong to the past dawns but to noons of the future.We should never forget that what we are is because of we versus others exists within the larger Indian or Indian sub-continental civilization. Our own identity gets accentuated only in the matrix of plurality of our civilization. If we the Punjabi think that we are a better people it is because others too think that we are a better people. Making us exclusive from others in political, or cultural, or historical terms will be a foolish and myopic view about the people and nature around us. We must be honest to accept that we are what we are because we are living in a plural society. Making an exclusive Punjab in political terms will be as much suicidal in today's time as a business man would like to do business in a city of dumbs and paupers.
Secondly, globalisation sets in motion all those good points in every society as man can locate from time to time by different means and in different contexts.
Punjabis are taking automatically faster than others by being global, as much as they are giving to others by being in a dominant position at so many places and stations of life.
So, Let us be proud of being a punjabi but let us not become stupid fanatic of calling an exclusive political or geographical territory for the punjabis.

I came into this site through yahoo when I was researching a bit about our culture. What I dislike and many of you may agree is the fact that in every hindi movie the Jat is seen as a wacko person who is "kamala" Why? Why is such a stereotype put on us? We are all the same. We should be treated equally. Movies put a major impact, stereotypically on society today. I was born in Canada and I dont want ma views to change on ounjabi. But what is one suppose to do when Hindi movies are like this too?

What you are saying is old news now. How are Sikhs brainwashed by Brahmin ideology?
Sikhs and hindu's don't even mix. Sikh's make a point of rejecting hindu customs and traditions. In turn Hindu's have done the same. All the Khalistani propoganda has been directed towards England and North America because by gaining the support of the sikhs outside of India they can raise the most money possible inorder to buy arms. That is why the proportion of Sikh's supporting Khalistan are much lower in India than the rest of the world. Even though most of the stuff said isn't true or taken out of context they have succeeded in the basic goal of seperating Sikh's and Hindu's. Once this has been done Sikh's and Hindu's have no loyalty to each other and the blood shed can begin. And Manvir you are part of this scheme. All people like you do is gain your knowledge from bias sources and think you know it all. Please give the Sikh's some credit. They aren't going to become Hindu's because if they want to be Hindu's they wouldn't have become Sikh's in the first place. If you think Sikhism is under threat then address the problem in a proper way not just by saying Brahmins are the reason and implying the only solution is Khalistan. You, me and most others know this is what it's all about.

And Rani Kaur do you have any statistics to back up your claims. I'd be surprised if you do because I think you'll find that firstly Sikh's are still the majority in Punjab and secondly proportions have not considerably changed either. On another point who told you that more Sikh's are leaving Punjab than Hindu's. Not all Punjabi's migrate to outside India. Maybe you would feel better if you consulted statistics on migration out of Punjab as a whole before making such claims.

I was born in England and decided to go and live with my relatives in the Gurdaspur district. I am 20 now and i lived in India from when I was 8 to 14. By this time terrorism had become so bad in Punjab that not having a pag on was like risking your life because a fundamentalist may mistake you for being a hindu. Offcourse retaliation would follow.
My parents said that they weren't going to let me grow up in such a 'kharaab' environment. I had to leave my own country and come back to England. A Punjabi can't live in Punjab because of people like Manvir Singh and Rani Kaur.

So to people like them stop spreading false propoganda because people are soon going to realise you for who you really are.

i am 18yrs old born in Punjab and moved here at the age of 11 i recived all my religious education from my grand parents in india and when i moved here i was amazed at how diffrent sikhism is viewed by the sikhs here. The basic belifs which make us unique have been overlooked and hindu, brahmin ideology fed to us here. i have only visited a handful of sites which address problems faced by young sikhs here in the true fashion. eg there is so many sites claiming that eating meat is not right and not accepted in the sikh religion even worse there are sites which say sikhs can eat meat but not beef the this could not be further from the truth. people who preach such nonsense are brahmins trying to preverse the minds of young sikhs who cannot tell the diffrence. when guru gobind singh created the khalsa he clearly said that "KUTHA" meat is forbiden this is halal meat or any meat where the animal is made to suffer or is sacrificed in the name of god. if you meet a true singh he will give you a 10 day lecture on meat eating.In India nahing singhs(guru gobinds laddla comb his saint soldiers) regularly eat meat. some of these so called brahmins even go as far as saying that meat should not be touched then how do you explain Guru Gobind Singh he had a falcon and they are meat eaters they usually only eatfrom the hand of their master and Guru ji must have handled meat.

on the 15th february 1980 the akal takht released a hukumnama allowing baptized sikhs to eat meat. yet despite these sikhs are living as hindus an a world areated by brahmin ideology. it saddens me to say this but sikhs are forgetting themselves and their own religion. this was forseen by guru gobind singh jee as he wrote,

As long as the Khalsa retains the distinctiveness of the sikh ideals i shall bless it with power and glory, but when it follows the ways of the brahmins i shall not trust it. for this i do not blame the youth of today as i have seen too often in my local gurudwara where the youth have been labeled as not interested. the true reason for the lack of intrest in sikhism by todays youth is that there is not enough education. and the messages given to the youth are not reflecting the teachings of the 10 gurus.

another thing that constantly worries me is how there is so much hate in young punjabis. there seems to be hate directed mainly at muslims and hindus how can this be sikhs talking guru Nanak spent more than half his life travelling with mardana who was a muslim, Guru Tegh bhadur gave his life to save the brahmins and guru Gobind never raised hi sword except in self defence.

if we are to learn anything and if this great religion is to surviv throuht this new millenium we have to get together and re evaluate what thi religion is about and correct the mistakes and the nonsense that has been fed to us by all these brahmins.

What all have been written above seems to be a fantasy but a lovely one. Any way it is not possible for many obvious reasons.

One the Punjabis on the pakistani side are no proud of their punjabiat.

Second the Indian Punjab is getting more and more backward day by day. Our youth losing direction with not much interest in Education and HardWork. Getting more and more used to all kinds of drugs and intoxicants they can afford to buy or procure. No thats not a small problem as I have seen with my eyes every thing all these 25 years.

With no further development in Indian Punjab we are losing all our edge as in this changed economy agriculture is no more important.

And above that we have our elders who have no vision and morality left in them except their ever eagerness to make their selfish ends. Our politicians all only a bunch of thugs and marauders. Our religious leaders all a group of greedy liars who with their outdated theology always out to mislead us to the fire of the hell even on this planet and fill their pockets.

With this in kitty where can we be all directionless and aimless heading to? Only a big hell a more dirty one. Only God seems can help us or a very few educated ones of us. No way else.

Unless the Indian Punjab is healthy there can be no existance to the Global Punjab all you people are talking about.

Please help Indian Punjab find a direction to developement for itself or we will have nothing but a history to be proud of.

As part of our curriculum in MBA, we were supposed to study the various ethnic business systems that exist. Interestingly enough I found out that the “Punjabi Business System” is based on solid foundation. I used RANBAXY (a successful pharmacy company in India, run by a Punjabi family) as a model and found that the basic Punjabi attitude – aggressive, daring and progress oriented, help them become good business men. Clearly the future of Punjabis is bright, since we inherently are built to be entrepreneurs. Although, we must learn to share our resources with people of our community and should in courage development as a social cause.

I think this migration of Sikhs out of Punjab in such large numbers is a diabolical plan by certain people to reduce the proportion of Sikhs in Punjab(India)so as to ultimately make it into a Hindu majority state.Hindus don`t seem to be migrating in such large numbers.I believe certain people are making the life of Sikhs miserable in Punjab while protraying life in other parts of the world as a bed of roses so as to encourage them to migrate out.As it is the proportion of Sikhs there has already been reduced significantly compared to when modern(East) Punjab was first carved out of the old (Indian) Punjab(which included also present Haryana) in the 60s.If the(Sikh?)government of Punjab does not take steps to change this trend by encouraging Sikhs to remain in Punjab ,Punjab too will be lost to the Sikhs in a short while.Then Sikhs will be a minority every where and will have to play second fiddle to others even in their own homeland-as they are already doing in the parts of the world to which they have migrated , which, however, have been, and are being, protrayed as heavens by certain quarters-something which they are not(what with the discrimination, culture shock-which can lead to even loss of their children,hostility of the indigeneous peoples, etc).

You talk proudly of a Global Punjab. No doubt it shows the Punjabis to be enterprising because only one with enterprise would dare to venture out of his own home. But have you ever wondered what the long-term effect of this enterprising spirit is going to be. Lets not talk about the short term ones- like culture shock- for they could be temporary.Its the long terms ones that Iwant to point out. Now, look at the Punjabis in America, say.Then fast forward to, say, 2100 AD.What would have happened to those Punjabis by then? Would they still be speaking Punjabi? Would they still consider themselves to be Punjabis? Just compare with the Swedes or Germans or Italians or Greeks who had in the 19th century migrated there. Do These still practice their original cultures or speak their original mother tongues? Or even consider themselves to be Swedes or Germans or Italians or Greeks? Or consider whatever has been happening in Africa , especially what happened in Uganda some decades ago? Or in Fiji, for that matter. To migrate to another country may not be as good a thing as many people think. First, sooner or later you will be absorbed into the local population , forgetting your original culture and language and identity. Secondly,you can`t say when an Idi Amin will emerge and drive you out. Don`t think the West is an exception to this :even in a nation as tolerant as Australia has been an anti-immigrant party has won quite a large amount of support within only a short while of its emergence.Things can change all of a sudden!And for the Sikhs, moving out of Punjab is only serving to alter the balance in the Hindus` favour who don`t migrate in such large numbers as Sikhs are doing. And this is suicidal. You may think we are all Punjabis and thus there is nothing to fear. Yes , we are .But our religious differences have been enough for Muslims to want a separate country of their own and for Hindus to disown their own mother tongue and ,perhaps, even encourage the central non-punjabi government to slaughter large numbers of fellow Punjabi( Sikhs).With Punjab under Hindu control there won`t be a place for Sikhs to return to if a change occurs in the place to which Sikhs have migrated to. Why don`t Sikhs be like the Japanese who spend their energies in developing their own country rather than migrate at the first instance and in the process be a loss to their own land and suffer all the culture shock- and discrimination- and the possibility of being chased out in the future.Not forgetting ultimately losing their identity.

The trouble with Punjabis is that while Punjabis have excelled in many fields (military,agriculture,business, industry) we have failed in the field of political leadership.We have not produced a single leader of the calibre of Churchill,Ataturk, Giribaldi, Bismarck, Mao Tze Tong, Hitler(N.B.: for all his cruelty he had charisma and could mesmerise crowds-hence a great leader), Mahatma Gandhi, etc- at least since the last 150 years or so.Punjabis have had to depend for leadership on their co-religionist from outside Punjab-the Muslims on the likes of Jinnah and the Hindus on the likes of Nehru, who may not have had the interests of Punjabis at heart or may not have realised the peculiarities of Punjab and Punjabi society. Only the Sikhs had leaders who -though mediocre-were from the Punjab and had the welfare of Punjab at heart.There was never any real leader who had the charisma to hold the masses of the Punjab together and mesmerise them with talk of Punjabi greatness or unity or what not which could have kept Punjabis Punjabi the way Jinnah was able to mesmerise the Muslims with `Muslimness` and lead them away from Punjabiness(though failing with his own Gujarati Muslims - many of whom until today prefer to call themselves Gujarati or indian rather than Pakistani).The Hindus too have since the last century been mesmerised by Swami Dayananda and his otherwise unacceptable-outside of Punjab,that is( including in his native Gujarat)-ideas and beliefs and not produced a single leader of calibre. In short, because of the absence of a trully charismatic Punjabi leader and because of the trust placed on leaders who were not Punjabis the Punjabis have been torn asunder and have suffered.Even since the last few decades and now, inspite of Nawas Sharif and Zail Singh and Inder Kumar Gujral, Punjabis can`t be said to have had or have any leaders of (political) calibre or charisma.The charisma is still in leaders like Bhutto and Gandhi-though whether they have admistrative ability(which most Punjabi leaders have) is another question- and not in any of the Punjabi leaders.

I agree with all these wonderful comments re: global punjab. And some will say these sentiments are ok in an ideal world but are not altogether with reality. Unfortunatly it is hard being a non-realist these days. Away from the shores of the homeland (i am writing this from Liverpool, UK) disharmony breeds in the rampant fertile plains of a new kind of rascism. It is one thing to 'dislike' etc your Pakistani neighbour for often valid historic reasons, but quite another when one's own community turns their face away from you because you do not conform to the image of what a 'good punjabi' does, says, acts like etc. This is like being a stranger in your own land, and is one of the worst forms of non-globalism there is. I echo all these sentiments for greater understanding and non-judgemental attitudes in punjabis dealing with eachother, wherever they are, and whatever cultural influences they have had the fortune or more often the misfortune to be born into, through no fault of their own. It seems everything has its price.

Have finally got around to getting onto 'the net' this week. One of my first tasks was to do a search for 'punjabi'. That's what brought me to this site, and I'm really, really pleased! Its fantastic to see so many fellow Punjabis sharing the view that we must keep our common Punjabi braadri alive and flourishing across that accursed, illogical border that seperates West Punjabis from their Amritsar and East Punjabis from their Lahore. Punjab.......the land of five rivers. What a great place, and great people. 1947 divided this great land,
separating families, murder, rape, you name it, it happened. People who lived together for hundreds of years
suddenly became like animals, and killed each other, not even respecting some one's mother who others once
regarded as their mother. All this at the hands of the British. How could the Punjabis be so gullable and be led
along by the British, even to this day the Punjabis have not realised what we have lost in 47 was so
precious. It is about time that the Punjabis (Sikh, Hindu, Muslim) around the world and in India and Pakistan
should rise up and want independence from both India and Pakistan and the great jewel city of Lahore
become the capital of a united Punjab again as it once was. It will be a great struggle to free ourselves from
the clutches of the two countries, because Punjab is the bread basket of the countries.

Punjabis are a totally different people from rest of the subcontinent, our food, our culture, our libas, our
language and most of all our LOVE for OUR PUNJAB is on a different level to anyone else.

say. I'm trying to understand your emotional
outbursts and expressions. You seem quite
bitter over all that has taken place in
dividing us Punjabis the world over. But I feel
we cannot just blame the old guards for this.
If I have read History correctly, they had very
little choice as they were pitted against
each other by various people of power. Anyway
the downfall of a race begins when there is low
tolerance level. And all religions actually
teach us tolerance.

The problem lies with us
people who allow the 5 thieves to interfere in
our daily life, Kaam, Krodh, Lobh, Moh &

Punjabi's do not let me down. We never beg or live on handouts no matter where in the world we are. Work hard and look at the well to do's for encouragement and role models. If for some reason, you are not a professional or a career person, ensure that your kids do become one. Do not be jealous of other Punjabi's, but you can always beat them with your children's careers. we did not cross the seven seas and escape the Pakistani and Indian downward regimes to come to the foreign lands to be put downs by the others. There is strength in numbers. Together we will survive.

As a matter of fact we are the ambassadors for other Punjabis still in the East and the West Punjab. In India and Pakistan the number of internet connections is very low still and the cost is too high. But there are millions of our brothers in North America, Asia and Europe who have internet connections. We need to spread this important message before we break ourselves more and more.

Nationalism

Nationalism is a curse. Its the single myopic reason that you and I tend to
hang on to false values of greatness about our respective countries, given
ourt intertwined histories, Its the reason we fail to look at people, and
rather concentrate on their origins, Its the motivation used by our politicans
to manipulate our strings without letting us become aware that you and I are
mere puppets on a string.


Its the senseless ness, that lets one Soldier shoot at another one from across a border, based on a nothing more than orders to
kill the enemy. Its a random event that resulted in you being born in India
and me in Pakistan, things could equally well have been different because of
random events theory, and our roles would have been switched at birth, but
still we would defend the views of our assumed nationality.
