My name is Furrukh Khan and I teach at Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS). I have been in Delhi for the last three months as the ASIA Fellow at Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS). This scholar-exchange programme is run by the Asian Scholarship Foundation (ASF), a Bangkok based funding agency set in place by the Ford Foundation.

I am here for the duration of six months to carry out research (through oral interviews) on the survivors of the Partition. This would be the second-leg of research that I have been working on in Pakistan and have just completed a documentary based on such interviews (Stories of the Broken Self: Pakistani Women’s Narratives of Partition). It should be noted that this would be a precedent-setting endeavor as no Pakistani academic has undertaken such a project before. It would undoubtedly lead to collaborative work with Indian Scholars doing research on this defining event of the modern South Asian history.

My fieldwork would entail conducting and compilation of interviews with the survivors of Partition who were dis-located from their homes in the present-day Pakistan. One of the primary aims of this research would be to explicate the manner in which traumatic events are recalled in everyday language. Another objective is to further complicate the debate on the issue of Partition by putting more emphasis on the subjective experience of the survivor rather than his/her religious or national affiliation.

I have been granted permission to travel to a number of cities in Punjab including Gurdaspur, Amritsar as well as others such as Patiala, Chandigarh and Ambala. At the moment, I would like to establish contact with people from various walks of life who could help me in gaining access to migrants from the Western Punjab.

They were killed. The widow muslim wife and daughters survived and wat for. They gave their lives for wat??? So that muslims can cuss and mock us. To truthfully answer your question yes there were hinuds and sikhs who converted to islam an dvice verca. Most of them were coerced and many did it for retaining there properties and lifestyle in erstwhile West pakistan. One glaring infamous example was a Sikh Landlord Jangal Singh Cheema from Lyallpur and his heirs are very prominent in Pakistan Punjab politics could be Gulzar cheemas etc or somebody. Before any of u fanatics start thumping your chests keep in mind similar conversions did happen in India but because of its secular set up they were not publicised. Remember only living relative of Jinnah is Nusli Wadia of Bombay Diying living in India and his daughter lives in New York. Then again Gandhi’s elder son also converted to Islam when taunted Gandhi replied “I am glad he did so hopefully he will give up the vices like drinking, etc and be a good muslim and a man”.
Also Indian film Gadar is based on somewhat true story and there is a samadh somewhere of the guy who died. Also there are enough recorded instances when Sikhs killed Muslims and forced conversions and vice verca. Duraha pull near Ludhiana became infamous for Muslim massacres in 1947 and such incidents.
There is a prominent family in Punjab (India) whose patriarch had two wives and muslim family branch is in Lahore and both families meet each other whenever possible. There are also glorius examples when people of different faith helped each other. A detailed book was published by an Indian Author who went back to Pakistan to meet her uncle and also has listed many such cases. Remember most of the Rajput clans in Pakistan were Hindus at sometime many of them would have tikka ceremony at their ancestors samadhi after important functions such as marriages. They are very proud of their heritage. we lesser beings can have petty fights, partition happened nobody can undo it, but our stupid fights are going to drag us into oblivion, at one time Indian sub continent was way ahead of Indonesia, Malayasia, Hong Kong, China, etc now both countries are somewhat behind. Muslim women brutalised in Gujarat

NEW DELHI: The day after 59 people were burnt alive in a train in India's western state of Gujarat last month, a screaming mob chased Sultani Sheikh and her family with sticks, swords and cans of kerosene in their hands.

"My clothes were stripped and I was left stark naked. One by one the men raped me," Sultani, a Muslim woman from Delol village, told a panel examining the impact on Muslim women of the country's worst religious bloodshed in a decade. "I lost count after three," a report by the panel quotes her as saying. "All the while I could hear my son crying."

According to the report by a coalition of women's groups, many Muslim females suffered the most "bestial forms of sexual violence" including rape, insertion of objects into their bodies and burning in the violence.

The six-member team of women's activists spoke to hundreds of witnesses and survivors of the religious mayhem to prepare the report, entitled "How has the Gujarat Massacre Affected Minority Women: The Survivors Speak."

"Many of the women who were raped were then burnt to death," Malini Ghose, a member of the team, told Reuters on Thursday. But survivors and witnesses had horrific tales to tell the panel.

Saira Banu, living in a refugee camp in Ahmedabad, Gujarat's main city, says a group of men cut open her nine-month pregnant relative's stomach, took out her foetus with a sword and threw it into a blazing fire.

Medina Mustafa Sheikh, another refugee in an Ahmedabad camp, says she heard her young daughter screaming for help as a group of men raped her in a maize field where her family had hidden to escape a bloodthirsty mob of 500 people.

"My daughter was screaming in pain asking the men to leave her alone. My mind was seething with fear and fury. I could do nothing to help my daughter from being assaulted sexually and tortured to death," Medina told the women's panel. "My daughter was like a flower, still to see life...the monsters tore my beloved daughter to pieces," she said.

Activists working at a relief camp in Ahmedabad said many women arrived naked at the camp. One woman was brought to the camp unconscious, bleeding profusely, her body covered with bites and marks and relief workers dressing her wounds said they had to removed pieces of wood that had been pushed up her ••••••.

Police say survivors of the religious violence have been filing more than 100 complaints a day, but activists say the issue of sexual violence has been "grossly under-reported". "This time round in Gujarat, far more than in previous episodes of communal violence, women have been fair game," the report said. "Forced out of burning homes, running for their lives on violent streets, they have been targeted not only by rampaging mobs hellbent on hurting every Muslim woman, man and child in sight but far worse, by police whose job it was to protect them."

Let's get the history right....

Before Muslims - i.e. before the 7th century, there were Hindus and Buddhists all around South Asia - and yes that includes Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan (Buddha's statues at Bamian are a good example of this). So people who now proudly call themselves Muslims were forceably converted to Islam by invading armies from the west all that time ago. So I don't see why they have to be proud of the fact!!! If anything it should be humbling for them that their forefathers were converted under tirrany. And now they want to perpetrate the same attrocities on other populations!! Just open your eyes.

In contrast, other religions of South Asia – were and are peaceful religions. Sikhism, Hindism and Buddhism flourished not because of opression but because of free will. I’m not suggesting that one is better than the other. Neither, that one converts to the other. It’s what you make of it and how you want to live. People should make their own decisions. Oh by the way, Islam is not a South Asian religion – it all happened in the Middle East.

I’m a sikh myself and even though in the very distant past my forefathers must have been Hindus, I can’t forsee myself returning to that religion. Similarly I can understand why some Muslims might not want to get converted to the religion of their forefathers either – I mean from all that time ago – or even more recently as 1947 – or even conversions resulting because of marriages. However, the purpose of this discussion board was to find out if there were people out there who were forcibly converted to Islam in 1947 – and if they would convert back – if yes - why, if not – why not?

w.r.t. converting, the way u respect ur religion/ God, each one respects their own. And if u cannot respect that, u DO NOT respect 'religion' as u boast to.

My grandfather forcfully converted a whole family of Sikhs to Islam in Multan (He apperently wiped out 20 Sardars in one night). Now I am in Toronto and would like to marry and convert more Sikh girls to Islam. Who can dare challenge Islam. It is the best. Convert before we force u to do so.

I know it happened both ways, but my main point is that I would like to know the story from people who were converted.

Are there any out there who were or who know of people who were?

Another point I'm trying to make is... have the two societies changed enough to allow the people to come out of their fear for being attacked for reverse conversion to happen ... i.e. to the religion they were born in? Are reverse-conversions already happening?

i understand what you say and yes it does make me upset too but you cant forget that sikh and hindus were involved too, it was not only the muslims

I was deeply hurt when I realised that all these atrocities were committed against Sikh and Hindu people. My grandfather and his family were lucky to get out alive from Multan, Pakistan.

I had only heard about these stories from family, and now I have read them to some detail.

Whenever I think of all those women being raped and abducted, my blood boils over. You just have to imagine those bloody scenes.

My question then is, what happened to all those people who got converted??? Are there people in/from Pakistan who have memories of being converted, or who saw conversions? What is the likelihood that they convert back?

I'm sure there are old men/women out there who can't post on these message boards because of lack of education about the internet, but do people have elder ones who were once sikh/hindu, converted under the sword?

I am a sikh myself, and have nothing against other religions, but forceful conversions of one's faith do get to me.

I would like your views on this topic.
