i am his biggest fan. if anyone wants to listen to his poetry sung by various singers, then goto www.apnahome.net and scroll down to the very botton. my personal favorites are jagjit singh(goto shiv kumar batalvi-jagjit & chitra) and nusrat fateh ali khan(goto shiv kumar batalvi - various singers). in my opinion, they capture that actual essence of his words. hope that helps...

gave all his credit to the allmighty god, as if all his poetry was from that devine power. This was the greatness this poet who wrote one of his best geets when according to him he had nothing to write or say.

My father used to work in Punjab Cultural Affairs as Deputy Director (Finance) in Chandigarh. He used to tell the hardships of Shiv.

Shiv used to come regularly to his office to get some grant money and will sit with the staff for hours and have borrowed money from virtually every one in the office. Shiv used to drink heavily and was staying in sector 21 with his family. He had a job in the bank but lost it eventually as he was not an average person.

Doctors told him not to drink as he had damaged his Liver, his colour turned very dark too but he did not stop. He continued drinking and drowining himself in the sea of sorrow.

We lost him, but his grant still continued to his widow. Irony is his family was better off financially after he died but Punjabi poetry and people suffered an ir-repairable loss which can not be quantified in monetry value.

Besides Government grants, could we as a society have done better to save Shiv?

If we as a community understand and support each other we can save so many living Shivs between us, it will be a true tribute to Shiv Kumar Batalavi.

The BBC have a recording of an interview with Shiv, which was filmed during his visit to uk in 1972. I remember watching it as a child, and recently the BBC asian network played a few minutes of this interview, it showed Shiv reciting 'kee puch de ho haal fakeeran da'. Its worth chasing the BBC up for a recording of that interview. I have also sang one of Shivs songs 'jata jaag oh shera jaag, tera vasda rahe oh Punjab' it was written about the struggle during the british raj. I think anyone who says Punjabi language is crude should have a listen to Shivs poetry, they'll soon change their views. 'Mae ni mae' sung by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is one of my favourites, and 'eh mera geet kiseh nai goana' by Jagjit Singh.

If someone wants to listen to the one of the best selection of his songs, look out for Birha Tu Sultan by Jagjit Singh and Chitra Singh.. It's a masterpiece album ..
It is a pity that new generation of punjabis don't even know who he was... Lets help spread the word out and keep his memories alive..
